How does Facebook portal work?
All the Facebook Portal devices feature AI-powered “Smart Camera and Smart Sound” technology. This tech enables the cameras to recognise people and then follow them around the room and automatically pan and zoom while also minimising background noise and enhancing the voice of whoever is calling.

They don’t have to have a Portal device — it communicates just as well with the Messenger and WhatsApp apps on iPhone or Android phones and tablets, as well as with anyone signed into the Messenger website or WhatsApp app on a Mac or PC.
Do both parties need Facebook Portal?

Portal calls can only be received on Portal devices, on the Messenger app on mobile phones or tablets, on messenger.com or facebook.com, or on WhatsApp on mobile phones. Calling on messenger.com or facebook.com is only available using the browsers Chrome or Opera.

Not only can you video call somebody and not have to hold your phone right in front of your face, but Portal’s smart camera can lock onto that person’s face and track them as they walk around the room (so long as they stay in frame).
Can you FaceTime with Portal?
For the Portal, you’ll be out of luck if people want to reach you via Apple’s FaceTime, Microsoft’s Skype or Google Meet. While those platforms have web apps, the Portal’s browser doesn‘t allow access to its camera or microphone.
How do you answer a Portal call?
To answer a call, you can do things such as:
- Select Answer to join the call.
- Press on the Portal TV remote.
- Say “Hey Portal, answer”.
- Press on your Portal TV remote and say “Hey Portal, answer”.
How do I receive calls on Facebook portal?
To start a call, say, “Hey, Portal.” It will answer you with a beeping sound. Then say, “Call [contact name].” More than likely, Portal will give you a choice of people to call. Just say the number that is displayed above the person’s Facebook photo when the options come up on the screen.
Is portal better than Skype?
Portal is the best video experience I’ve yet seen for video chat, trumping Apple’s FaceTime, Skype, Google Hangouts and the rest. Additionally, the digital photo frame features of the Portal are terrific if you, like me, upload a lot of photos to Facebook. It’s cool to see them play back on the beautiful video screen.
Can I call my Portal from my phone?

Why is the red light on my Portal?
A red light on the front of your Portal will indicate when the microphone and camera are turned off. You can also use the included camera cover to block your Portal camera when you’re not using the camera.
