How to turn on a lighter

Look for rust, debris, or dirt.

If you’ve left a lighter outside for a long period of time the metal wheel on top might be rusted in place. If it won’t spin, it won’t light. If there is only dirt and debris inside the lighter you might be able to clean it out with your fingers or a pipe cleaner and get it going again.

Safely Using a Lighter. Hold the lighter vertically in your hand. Keep it below the thing that you are trying to light. The flame will remain vertical, regardless of the angle of the lighter, and you may burn your hand if you try to hold the lighter horizontally.

Simply take a fork and insert one of the side prongs into the top of the lighter between the 2 wheels, and simply force it up. (You may have to use a thinner item, such as a small screwdriver, or a thicker paperclip; depends on the brand, again. For a Bic, a fork should work pretty well.)

“Righties face the lighter to right, lefties face the lighters to the left.” When the lighter is facing the correct direction the flame will bend away from your hand, which means fewer burns and boo-boos. The tutorial racked up 4.1 million videos on TikTok.

Flicking a Bic lighter is easy once you get the hang of it. Use your thumb to roll the metal spark wheel down toward the red ignition button. Hold down the button to release gas. When you “flick” the wheel, you will generate a spark that ignites the gas.

The most common is international ISO 9994 which defines safety specifications of a lighter such as maximum flame height, resistance to elevated temperatures, flame extinction, etc. BIC Lighters meet or exceed ISO 9994 International Safety Standard to assure consumers quality and safety.

Pry the metal hood off of the lighter with a pair of pliers.

Try not to bend the metal as much as possible, because you’ll need the metal hood later. If the metal hood gets quite bent when you take it off, just squeeze it back into position with the pliers.

“Most young children who start fires by playing with lighters are ages 3 and 4. But a child as young as 2 years old is capable of operating a lighter,” said former CPSC chairman Jacqueline Jones-Smith last year, when the agency issued its rule requiring lighters to be child resistant.

BIC Classic Full-Size Pocket Lighters are made with pure isobutane fuel, with up to 3,000 lights per lighter.

Combusting wick produces carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, and other large particulates (6, 9). These larger particles will be inhaled and can irritate your lungs. As mentioned above, small, infrequent carbon monoxide exposure is also linked to health issues (4,7).

Don’t do it!

Kids who play with fire can end up burning themselves, hurting other people, and destroying important things, like homes and woods. If you see a kid playing with fire — even an older one — tell an adult.

Why do children play with fire? Children and young people start to play with fire for various reasons, ranging from natural curiosity in toddlers to older children using firesetting to express feelings of anger or emotional distress.

There is no legal age. Many stores will probably not let you buy a lighter if you are under 18, however they are probably not going to check you ID. Or you could buy one online. Or you could have someone 18+ to buy it for you.

For example, a child may set a piece of paper or object on fire out of frustration or sadness, Slavkin says. Psychologist Ken Fineman, PhD, who treats juvenile fire-setters, says multiple factors–such as personality characteristics and family and social circumstances–drive most fire-setting behavior.
