How to travel with a suit

Can you hang a suit on an airplane?

You can carry your suit onto the plane in a garment bag, as long as it fits within the airline’s carry-on policy dimensions. Most airlines, unfortunately, will not have a suit bag and instead will have to be folded and placed in the overhead locker.

Does a suit count as a carry on?

Based on my research, all US airlines count a garment bag as a carry-on, and not as a personal item, regardless of how small it is. To give an example, this is confirmed on American’s website: Soft-sided garment bags up to 51 inches / 130 cm (length + width + height) can also be taken as your carry-on item.

Will American Airlines hang a suit?

If traveling by car, place the bag across the back seat or flat in the trunk on top of your suitcases. For example, American Airlines requires hanging garment bags to measure no more than 22 by 14 by 9 inches.

How do you fly with a suit coat?

Rolling items up to pack in a suitcase saves space and also prevents wrinkles and disheveling. Lay the suit jacket and pants on a hard surface, smooth them out, and roll each item tightly from one end to the other. Once rolled, place each component of the suit in a suitcase or carry-on bag, space permitting.

How do you pack a suit without wrinkling it?

Should you keep suits in garment bags?

3. Store Your Suit without Garment Bags. A suit garment bag keeps your suit clean and free from dust and bugs. Go with cotton canvas garment bags because they‘re airy, and so it’ll be easier for moist (e.g. your sweat, rain water) to evaporate and keep your suit dry.

Can you check a garment bag on a plane?

Garment bags don’t usually count as part of the carry-on allowance for air travel. The baggage specifications provided by many airlines allow for garment bags to be carried as hand luggage, meaning you can still bring your rolling bag luggage and stow it away on the overhead bin (or the space provided under the seat).

Is a duffle bag a carry on?

Yes. As long as your duffle bag is within the airline’s size requirements for carry on luggage, you can use a duffle bag as a carry on item. For most airlines and flights, that means choosing a duffle bag that is no larger than 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches (for most flights).

What size garment bag can you carry on?

Size. In general, garment bags are not meant to be carry-on. Make sure you pay extra attention to the size of your bag and the size restrictions of the airline. The most common size limit for a carry-on is 22 x 14 x 9 Inches, so this is a safe chance.

Are clothes hangers allowed on airplanes?

Coat hangers are allowed in hand luggage unless they are exceptionally heavy and dangerous looking. Standard wire, plastic or wooden hangers are permitted in carry-on bags and checked bags. You might want to consider folding travel hangers to save space in your luggage.

Can you bring wire on a plane?

Please carefully pack your electronics items and make sure all cords are wrapped. While you can pack expensive, fragile electronics items in checked or carry-on bags, we recommend packing them in your carry-on. Books often require additional screening.

Can hangers be recycled?

Hangers are a hard-sell item for many recycling centers because they tend to jam machinery due to their small size and unique shape. Unless your hauler has expressly okayed them, you should never put coat hangers in with your recycling.

What can I do with unwanted hangers?

  • Give Them to Your Dry Cleaner. Alternatively, you could give them out to your dry cleaner to use in their day-to-day work.

How do you dispose of unwanted coat hangers?

If you don’t need them they can often be donated to charity shops who will use them again or some retailers who will recycle them. If they are broken try contacting your local council as local recycling centres have recycling containers for wood, metal and plastic where they could be recycled.

Why are wood hangers better?

Why premium wood clothes hangers are your best option

Here’s why: they’re much sturdier and won’t bend, which keeps your garment structure intact. will last a lifetime, which provides better value. have a stronger design, which allows for storage of heavier items like winter coats, jackets, and jeans.

Does goodwill take wooden hangers?

Material Matters

If you’re purchasing hangers with end-of-life in mind, stick with metal hangers. They are accepted for donation by most dry cleaners (call your local cleaner to confirm), and because steel is the most commonly recycled metal, many scrap metal recyclers will accept them.

Can hangers be donated?

Plastic hangers often cannot be recycled, but can be donated. Your recycling center is unlikely to accept them, as most plastic hangers are made from a mixture of plastic resins. A Fox News report from 2008 found that 85 percent of plastic hangers in the United States are not reused or recycled.
