If you want to plant them again the following season, it’s important to let the foliage die off. The flower bulbs need these nutrients to grow and to flower again next year.

Why do bulbs stop flowering?

Sometimes bulbs can become overcrowded and this may cause them to flower less. Every few years or when you suspect this is happening, dig up and divide your clumps and replant them. This can be done in late summer or fall, after the foliage has died back.

Will dried out bulbs grow?

Yes, if the bulb is still firm and plump it will most likely be able to be successfully planted. However, if the bulb smells bad due to rotting, is squishy or mushy, or is dry and shriveled up then the bulb should not be planted and can be thrown out.
