How to store dehydrated food

Does dehydrated food need to be refrigerated?

Our dehydrated and freeze dried vegetables are shelf stable—that is what the USDA defines as “foods that can be stored safely at room temperature.” So they will keep just fine without refrigeration (if kept in a cool, dark place). However, refrigeration will extend the life of shelf-stable foods.

How do you store dehydrated food long term?

Airtight Containers: Properly dried food can be stored in an airtight glass or hard plastic container that has an airtight seal, such as canning jars. Store in a cool, dark, dry place. We use Ball Mason Jars. Vacuum Sealing: This method is good for longer–term storage.

Oxygen absorbers are a lifesaver for dried food. They do exactly what their name suggests. By absorbing any oxygen in the jar, they increase the amount of time that you can store foods – both dried or otherwise. Simply place the oxygen absorber on the top of each jar and then seal it and store.

How long does dehydrated food last if vacuum sealed?

The short answer is that dehydrated food stored in a vacuum–sealed Mylar Bag with oxygen absorbers may last as long as 30 years.

Can you store dehydrated food in Ziploc bags?

Store your food in an airtight container that is impermeable to oxygen. Do not use containers such as Ziplock bags since these still allow oxygen to slowly seep into the bag. We recommend glass airtight jars or mylar bags.

Time in storage: Recommended storage times for dried foods range from 4 months to 1 year. Check for moisture: Foods that are packaged seemingly “bone dry” can spoil if moisture is reabsorbed during storage. Check dried foods frequently during storage to see if they are still dry.

Is freeze dried better than dehydrated?

Freeze–dried foods offer a longer shelf life, lower moisture content, and generally taste better than dehydrated foods. Freeze–dried foods rehydrate faster and also retain their original shape, texture, and color. A far greater variety of foods can be freeze dried than can be dehydrated.

Can you freeze dry dehydrated food?
