  2. must own at least one colony of honey bees for at least one full year.
  3. must score 70% or higher on a practical examination.

A permit is required to ship bees into or out of Texas. Each permit has its own fee requirements, and a permit is required with each individual shipment. A permit is also required to ship bees across county lines within Texas. One permit serves for all movements of bees between the counties listed on the permit.

How many acres do you need for beekeeping?

Generally speaking, most backyard beekeepers have 1 to 2 acres of land with 2 or 3 bee hives. I have personally had 10 hives on a 1 acre lot in a subdivision. One important thing to do is talk with your neighbors first.

What is the best month to start beekeeping?

The best time to start your hive is in the spring so that the colony you begin with has time to build up, lay brood (baby bees), increase in number, and store honey before the winter sets in.

How do I start beekeeping for beginners?

First things first: Take a beekeeping class in the fall or winter (around November or December). From there, order your bees and equipment. When your bees arrive in the spring (typically April), you’ll install your hive and spend the next 3-4 months feeding them a combination of sugar and water.

What month do bees come out?

Three of the most commonly encountered bees by homeowners are honey bees, carpenter bees and bumble bees. These bees usually become active in the spring with the warm weather and flowering of plants. They remain active throughout the summer and into the fall.

What time of day are bees most aggressive?

Sometimes, bees can be cranky for a few days following a more thorough inspection or hive manipulation. So, when going into the hive consider the time of day. Optimal time to enter the hive is later morning until early afternoon during times of good weather.

What time do bees go to sleep?

Similar to our circadian rhythm, honeybees sleep between five and eight hours a day. And, in the case of forager bees, this occurs in day-night cycles, with more rest at night when darkness prevents their excursions for pollen and nectar.

What time are bees out the most?

They generally return to their hives an hour before sunset because they can’t see well in low lighting. Considering all these factors, we typically see bees at their most active in the early afternoon. They’ll start their nectar gathering in the morning and stop shortly before sunset.

How long will a bee hive last?

Honey bee hives constantly raise new queens to replace the old ones. The queen bee, if a good one, can lay up to 2,000 eggs a day. So the worker bees are replaced as well. As long as the bees have good honey stores and are able to fight off disease they can live in a place indefinitely.

How long does it take for bees to calm down?

Re: How long till bees calm down

If the reason for their defensiveness is your actions, they usually calm down in a week or two. Sometimes quicker depending on how much you upset them. If the reason is the weather and the flow, they may be much better as soon as something new blooms.

Will bees attack at night?

So, do bee attack at night? Yes, they can attack at night if they are threatened. So, it’s better to be careful if there is a bee hive nearby. Some bees are more aggressive compared to others.

What happens if a queen bee stings you?

Do bees remember you?

Every queen bee has a stinger, and is fully capable of using it. Queen bees, however, almost never sting people; they reserve their stinging for other queen bees. This is unlike what happens to a worker bee, which loses her stinger and dies in the process of stinging.

Can I open my beehive at night?

Well we don’t all look alike to them, according to a new study that shows honeybees, who have 0.01% of the neurons that humans do, can recognize and remember individual human faces.

At what temperature can you open a bee hive?

Yes, you can open your beehive at night and even rob honey from your bees. Bees can see you at night, but your vision is reduced. The lack of light makes brushing your bees off the frames much harder, and if you are not covered correctly, they will sting you.

How do I know if my beehive is healthy?

Ideally you need to wait until temperatures reach 60°F (15°C) or more before working your beehives. The best time to inspect a hive is when the bees are out foraging.

Can you mow around beehives?

5 Signs of a Strong and Healthy Honey Bee Colony
  1. A Strong, Healthy Queen. Much of a honey bee hive’s activity revolves around a healthy queen.
  2. A Thriving Population. As important as the queen bee is, a healthy hive also relies on thousands of worker bees.
  3. Abundant Pollen and Honey Stores.
  4. A Healthy, Regular Brood Pattern.
  5. No Pests or Parasites.

Should a beehive be in sun or shade?

How Close to a Beehive Can You Mow? In most cases, you can mow right up to the edge of a beehive, as long as you don’t bump it with the mower. This is definitely a time to read your bees‘ behavior, though; if they start taking an interest in you when you are 15 or 20 feet away, it would be wiser to back off.

What do you put under beehives?

The hive should be placed in early morning sun. This gets the bees out of their hive earlier in the day to forage. In the Northeast, hives can remain in the full sun for the entire season. However in places with warmer climates, hives should receive some afternoon shade.

How far should beehives be from a house?

The ground under and hives should be kept weed free. Some people place the hives on mulch, wood chips and even carpet remnants. I added a layer of wood chips to the ground where the hives would be located. I placed two cinder blocks per hive on the ground, one in the front and one in the back.

What direction should beehives face?

It is equally as important to think about how your neighbors use their yard, so it is not a good idea to put a hive directly on a property line. Instead, place your hives ten feet or more from the property line.
