How to quote multiple authors

Use the word “and” between the authors‘ names within the text and use the ampersand in parentheses. In subsequent citations, only use the first author’s last name followed by “et al.” in the signal phrase or in parentheses. In et al., et should not be followed by a period.

Citing Works With Three or More Authors

Include only the last name of the first author, followed by “et al.” and the year published in all narrative and parenthetical citations APA. Note: The reference entry should list the names of up to 20 authors.

If there are three or more authors, list only the first author followed by the phrase et al. (Latin for “and others”) in place of the subsequent authors‘ names. (Note that there is a period after “al” in “et al.” Also note that there is never a period after the “et” in “et al.”).

APA in-text citations with multiple authors

If a work has two authors, separate their names with an ampersand (&) in a parenthetical citation or “and” in a narrative citation. If there are three or more authors, only include the first author’s last name followed by “et al.”, meaning “and others”.

Using et al.

In APA Style in-text citations, when a source has two authors, list both. When there are three or more authors, cite the first author followed by “et al.” APA does not recommend using “et al.” in the reference list. Instead, list up to 20 authors in full.

For a work with one or two authors, include the author name(s) in every citation. For a work with three or more authors, include the name of only the first author plus “et al.” in every citation, including the first citation, unless doing so would create ambiguity.

NOTE: The in-text citation for works with three or more authors is shortened to the first author’s name followed by et al. and the year.

Specifically, articles with one or two authors include all names in every in-text citation; articles with three, four, or five authors include all names in the first in-text citation but are abbreviated to the first author name plus et al.

A Work by Three or More Authors

List only the first author’s name followed by “et al.” in every citation, even the first, unless doing so would create ambiguity between different sources. In et al., et should not be followed by a period.

The term “al.” is an abbreviation of “alii” and, the entire phrase “et al.” always follows at least one person’s name, job position, or title. With that said, “et al.” replaces author names in endnotes, footnotes, and in-text citations; however, it is NOT used in reference lists!

If the work has four or more authors/editors the abbreviation ‘et al. ‘ should be used after the first author’s name. It is also acceptable to use ‘et al. ‘ after the first author if the work has three authors.

In the citation, if a source has three or more authors, the name of the first author should be given, followed by the phrase “et al.”

For the in-text citation for a book with eight or more authors, include the first author and then ‘et al. ‘. Include the first six authors‘ names, then insert three ellipsis points and add the last author name in the Reference List.

APA in-text citation style uses the author’s last name and the year of publication, for example: (Field, 2005). For direct quotations, include the page number as well, for example: (Field, 2005, p. 14).

In Harvard style, citations appear in brackets in the text. An in-text citation consists of the last name of the author, the year of publication, and a page number if relevant. Up to three authors are included in Harvard in-text citations. If there are four or more authors, the citation is shortened with et al.

What is Harvard Style? The Harvard referencing system is known as the Author-Date style. It emphasizes the name of the creator of a piece of information and the date of publication, with the list of references in alphabetical order at the end of your paper.
