Is Sean pronounced Shawn?
It’s just not right. Sean is from the Irish language. It’s should be spelt as “Séan” or “Seán.” The fada (the dash above the e and a) enlongates the pronunciation of the vowels which makes it sound more like “Shawn.”
Is Sean the same as Shawn?
The spelling “Sean” is the Irish spelling; “Shaun” is the Anglicized spelling. But both are pronounced identically as “Shawn.” They are pronounced correctly, although they are not English names, but rather anglicised versions of the Irish name ‘Seán’, meaning ‘John’.
Why is the name Sean pronounced Shawn?
The Irish language does not have the sound /ʤ/ (the sound which English typically writes as “J”). Thus, when the name Seán/Séan began to be used as an English name, it was used with the standard Irish pronunciation, which sounded like “Shawn” in English, and later began to be spelled that way as well.
How do you pronounce Sean with an accent?
It is pronounced “Shawn”. In northern Ireland (Donegal and Ulster), it is often written with the accent on the “e” not on the “a” which is the origin of my own name “Shayn” usually written “Shane” but it is just the Northern Irish version of Sean.
