- Take a break every few hours.
- Prep before you go.
- Make sure your vehicle’s up to the task.
- Keep cash on hand.
- Eat smart.

- Consider keeping extra water and gas in the car.
How bad is an 8 hour drive?
Driving this distance is far, far more dangerous than flying it. An 8 hour drive would be about 500 miles. At 1.11 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles this equates to a risk of death for that trip of 0.00055%, which is rather absurd when you think about it.
How do I prepare for a long car journey?
Road trip checklist
- Fluid levels. Before any long trips, make sure that fluids such as engine oil, brake fluid and antifreeze are topped up.
- Tyres are one of the most important parts of your car to check before setting off.
- Brakes.
- Lights.
- Pack for a worst-case scenario.
- Get breakdown cover.
How do you drive long distances without getting tired?
How to stay alert
- Never drink and drive.
- If possible, don’t drive long distances alone.
- Get enough shut-eye.
- Don’t begin a trip so late that you’re driving when you usually sleep.
- Watch your posture.
- Take a break at least every 2 hours.
- Have 2 cups of a caffeinated drink like coffee, if you can have caffeine.
Are long trips good for your car?
Generally speaking, long trips are not going to be bad for your car. In fact, many newer cars run on diesel and they have a better time when they are driven over a long distance! Because driving, in general, is going to wear the engine out, even if long trips don’t do any particular damage.
Can you drive 1000 miles in a day?
First of all, as we mention on the forum very often, online map programs don’t do a good job of including required stops into their estimates, so that 1000 mile trip will likely take about 17.5 hours, not 14.5. But 1000 miles is way too far for a solo driver in a single day.
Do long trips hurt cars?
Depreciation Costs: A long road trip can inflict costly damage on your car, even if you don’t notice it right away. Every mile results in a certain amount of wear and tear to the engine, the tires and other moving parts. Lease Penalties: Folks who lease their car might also shy away from long trips.
Is driving your car all day bad?
Originally Answered: Is it bad for a car to be driven a very long distance every day? As long as it’s properly maintained, there should be no problems. Maintenance may be needed a bit more often than a rarely driven car, but as long as the car is kept in good condition and not abused, it should last a good long time.
What can destroy a car engine?
How We Destroy Our Engines Over Time
- Ethanol. One of the most damaging things you can do to your engine over time is adding ethanol gasoline.
- Oil Sludge. Oil sludge develops over time when oil isn’t changed often enough.
- Lack of Fluid.
- Cold Starts.
- Poor Maintenance.
Does revving the engine damage it?
Revving the engine won’t speed up the process. In fact, that could cause easily avoided damage. Cold revving causes abrupt temperature changes that create stress between the engine’s tight-fitting components.
Does driving fast damage your engine?
“Driving Fast” is not what damages your engine. In fact, stop-n-go city driving is a lot harder on your engine. As long as the engine does not overheat, or the oil gets low, then a long distance drive at speed is not a problem. “Driving Fast” is not what damages your engine.
Is it better to break slowly or quickly?
Under normal circumstances, braking a bit more gradually over a longer distance is a bit better than stopping suddenly. In general you’ll have less heat build up, and less wear on your pads.
Should I rev my engine before switching off?
Aside from wasting fuel, increasing your tailpipe emissions, and contributing to noise pollution, revving the engine before shutoff also accelerates the wear on the engine’s moving parts, especially the pistons and crankshaft.
Is it bad to take off fast in your car?
If you go faster, your engine will use more gas or diesel per mile driven and your transmission will wear out. Also, when you go so fast it means extra stress on all the small moving parts of your engine, and that can cause it to wear out more quickly.
Is driving 80 mph bad for your car?
Driving at 80 mph will decrease fuel economy and therefore increase fuel consumption; fuel costs will be higher and CO2 (and other harmful gas) output will be higher. Our limited supply of fuel will be depleted faster if we all drive at 80 mph than if we drive at 70 mph.
What happens if you don’t warm up your car?
What Will Happen if You Don’t Warm Up Your Carbureted Car Before Driving? The more you drive with your engine cold the faster the cylinder and piston will wear out. Simply leaving the engine to idle doesn’t warm it up efficiently, so the car’s application will remain cold until you start driving.
Does revving the engine burn gas?
Every time that you rev your car’s engine, it’s going to pull a whole bunch of air and fuel into it since it’s going to act as if you’re driving it. This is going to lead to it burning through more gas than it would under normal circumstances.
Is it bad to rev engine in neutral?
Yes, this causes engine wear. When the transmission is in neutral and the engine is “revved” without any load, the spinning engine internals will accelerate, gathering rotational and lateral forces at a faster rate than designed by the manufacturer. Rapidly revving an engine will heat up the piston rings much faster.
Why is idling bad for your engine?
It’s bad for your engine
Since your engine is not operating at its peak temperature when you idle, the fuel doesn’t combust completely, leaving residue behind that can ultimately damage your exhaust system.
