How to prepare a metal trough for planting

Do you need to drill holes in metal planters?

You want to make sure the veggies you are going to plant have plenty of drainage, so drilling holes at the bottom of your galvanized bins is important. How Foam Helps. When using big containers, you need a large amount of soil to fill them from top to bottom. That gets expensive quickly, and you end up paying for soil you don’t need. Adding a few inches of foam peanuts or chunks in the bottom of the container reduces the amount of soil needed to fill the planter.

What do you put in the bottom of a wooden planter?

Consider Drainage

Even with drainage holes, however, water may not be able to drain from the planter if the soil is too tightly packed on the bottom of the container. To improve drainage, place a layer of broken terracotta pots, pebbles or Styrofoam packing peanuts on the bottom of the planter.

How do I keep my planter box from rotting?

Peat moss mixed with vermiculite or sand is a perfect choice. Do not use garden soil as this is far too heavy and will compact together, therefore preventing adequate drainage. Sit your planter box on top of some bricks or pieces of wood to allow at least 2 inches of space for air circulation.

Should I line my raised garden bed with plastic?

You can line your raised bed to make it more durable and to prevent toxics from leaching into the soil. For lining, use landscape fabric found at garden supply stores or cloth fabric from clothing. Avoid non-porous plastic, as it can retain too much water and discourage beneficial insects and worms.

Should I put rocks in the bottom of my raised garden bed?

Since you’re putting your highest-quality soil on the surface, whatever’s underneath will need to drain off an excess of moisture. Avoid using materials like rocks on the bottom of your raised bed, as this can create an artificial water table that will prevent good drainage.

The most popular height for raised beds is 11″. (This is the height of two standard “2 x 6″ boards, which actually measure 1.5″ x 5.5”.) This height provides sufficient drainage for most crops. For best results, there should be another 12″ or more of good soil below the bed.
