How to prepare a floor for tile

What do you put on floor before tiling?

6) Prime the surface

The last step before tiling is to apply an even coat of diluted SBR primer and allow it to dry – this will create the perfect grippy surface, ready to be tiled with tiling adhesive. Top tip: When tiling a wooden floor, use a flexible tile adhesive and grout to reduce the risk of breaking.

Can you lay tile directly on subfloor?

While tile can be laid on plywood, do not install tile directly onto the plywood subfloor itself. Use intervening layers of two sheets of plywood.

What subfloor is needed for tile?

The subfloor under the tile should be at least 1 1/8″ thick, with a minimum of 5/8″ thick exterior grade plywood topped by 1/2″ cement backer board.

Do you have to put cement board under tile?

In short, tile and grout are not inherently waterproof. Cement backer board is often used as a tile base on plywood or OSB subfloor. Cement backer board on concrete as a subfloor or underlayment is usually not recommended or needed. In most cases, you can apply tile directly to the concrete.

What is best underlayment for tile floor?

Exterior-Grade Plywood

Exterior plywood is an acceptable underlayment for tile and is preferred to interior-grade plywoods because the bonding adhesives used are waterproof. If water seeps through the tile installation to the underlayment, it will not cause the wood to swell, as happens with interior-grade plywood.

Does tile floor need underlayment?

A tile floor consists of three individual layers: the subfloor, the underlayment, and the surface tile you walk on. (Without one, even slight movement of a subfloor can cause grout lines to crumble and tiles to break.) Good underlayment also provides a waterproof barrier between the tile and the subfloor.

Do you need a moisture barrier under ceramic tile?

Finally, moisture can also cause the growth of mold and mildew in the grout lines, unless they are sealed. Therefore, basement ceramic tile installations need to be treated with a quality water-barrier sealer to create an impervious, invisible layer across the tile and grout.

How thick should backer board be for tile floor?

Floors: A 1/4-inch minimum thickness is needed, but thicker panels are also fine. Walls: Use 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch-thick cement board, not 1/4-inch. The extra thickness is needed to span the studs and provide a solid base for the tile.

Which is better cement board or Hardibacker?

HardieBacker is much more light, and it is also the best selling brand of cement board available. It is much cleaner because it does not have any glass in it. It allows for a smooth job with minimal mess. As a bonus, HardieBacker board has an EZ Grid pattern so you can cut perfect lines.

Can I just screw down cement board?

Screw and Joints

Do not use drywall screws as they are not recommended to be used to hold the backer board in place. All of your backer board pieces should be cut before they are placed on the floor. Along the perimeter, screws should be installed at least ½ inch from the edge, but no more than 2 1/4 inches.

Which side of cement board do you tile on?

Cement board has a smooth side and a rough side. Face the rough side out if you will be using thin-set mortar adhesive to install the tile but the smooth side out if you will be using latex mastic.

Can you tile straight onto HardiBacker?

The Hardibacker will be fine to tile straight onto.

Do I have to use thinset under Hardibacker?

The installation manual for HardieBacker suggests to embed it in thin-set and it should be installed over plywood. Thus I would suggest removing the current wood planks flooring, install a 3/4″ outdoor grade plywood, thinset and then your HardieBacker (screwed down). You do not need to tape or thinset.

What do you put under Hardibacker?

Use minimum 1/2 in exterior grade plywood or equivalent, positioned across the wood cabinet. Space between plywood supports is not to exceed 16 in on center. Do not align HardieBacker cement board joints with plywood joints.

How thick should mortar be under tile?

The terms thinset cement, thinset mortar, dryset mortar, and drybond mortar are synonymous. This type of cement is designed to adhere well in a thin layer – typically not greater than 3/16th thick. For example, a 3/8″ notch trowel will produce a 3/16th inch thick coating after the tiles are pressed in to the cement.

What kind of Thinset goes under Hardie board?

MongoCT. An unmodified thinset (Masterblend) is fine between the Hardi and the subfloor. The reason for the layer of thinset between the cement board and the subfloor is to fill the voids/gaps between the two. It’ll keep the cement board from moving up and down.

Do I need vapor barrier behind Hardibacker?

Hardibacker doesn’t need a vapor barrier or waterproofing except you do need to tape and thinset the joints.

Can you put screws in Hardie board?

If you mean “can you put screws into James Hardie siding” the answer is yes. Otherwise, you may have landed on the wrong website. James Hardie boards can technically be drilled like wood, but it is best to use a masonry bit to drill this tough fiber-cement board.

Should I use modified or unmodified thinset?

Therefore, it’s best to use unmodified thinset when working with an impervious installation membrane like Prodeso for installing radiant floor heating. It’s important to note that latex-modified thinset can still be used between the membrane and the subfloor because it is not impervious.

What happens if you use modified thinset on Kerdi?

Modified thinset mortars aren’t recommended for use with Kerdi because they must dry out to gain strength, whereas the membrane inhibits drying, which can lead to unpredictable results. For example, if a shower is used before the mortar has cured properly, leaks and polymer leaching can occur.

Can I use thinset as a floor leveler?

You can use thinset to install tile over an uneven cement floor and leave the floor perfectly level. You can also use thinset mortar to level out an uneven cement floor or fill small holes in the floor without installing tile.

What is the difference between unmodified and modified thinset?

Unmodified thinset has been around forever. Unlike unmodified mortar, which consists only of a blend of Portland cement, sand, and water retention agents, modified thinset includes additional retention products, such as latex polymers, which can increase its performance and strength.
