How to know what size necklace to get

Cut the string (or just hold it with your fingers, keeping the spot precisely), lay the string straight and measure it with a ruler. Round that number to the nearest necklace length offered for the design you’re looking at.

16” Necklace: Falls perfectly around the base of the neck like a collar. On a petite woman it hangs more loosely around the neck and falls just at the collarbone. On a plus size women it may sit more like a choker. 18” Necklace: A common choice for women that sits elegantly on the collarbone.

18″: An 18″ necklace falls right about at the collarbone and is the most popular chain length among women.

Choose the right length – 18” chains are preferable for smaller necks, and then reach the base of the neck; 20” chains reach the collarbone, 22” chains will hang a few inches below your collarbone, the 24” chains hang some inches above your sternum, while the 30” chains rest on your sternum.

Ultimately, body shape and size play a main role in determining the length of chain that will look best on each individual customer. For example, a 22 inch chain may be more flattering for someone with a narrow torso compared to someone with a broader chest who may look better in the 24 inch.

Standard (or princess) length necklaces (usually 45cm or 18″) are the most commonly worn length and will suit most situations. If you’re looking for a necklace or pendant to wear day to day, then this is likely to be your go-to length.

The gauge of our most popular chains ranges from 0.9mm – 1.7mm, so unless you have a particularly large pendant to accommodate, pick something within this size range. I would suggest 0.9mm – 1mm as a good starting point for most lightweight pendants.

If you want a chain that sits on the collarbone (or you want the pendant to hang over a crew neck) choose an 18″ necklace. Opt for a 20″ necklace to fall just below the collarbone or if you plan to wear it over a turtleneck. A 22″ necklace will fall at or just above the top of your bust and is a popular choice.

The strongest styles of chains are made up of interlocking links that do not have a bending point, and won’t break in twisting or folding. Cable, curb, mariner, Figaro, and rope are just some of the strongest chain styles, especially if they are thick.

Necklace measurements are essentially chain measurements. If you want to measure the chain, you will need to open it up and make it as straight as possible. Lay it out on a table or flat surface so that it will be easy to measure.

In addition, the three inch drop is the distance between the top edge of the higher portion of the necklace and bottom edge of the lower portion of the necklace. For example, if it were simply a pendant and the pendant was three inches long, it would be a three inch drop.

One of the more common necklaces is a “choker.” A choker will typically vary from 14 – 16 inches. These are made to sit high and close to the neck. A necklace called a “Princess necklace” is 16 to 18 inches long. Anything longer than 32 inches is a “rope” necklace.
