Take the cat your local rescue centre

If you haven’t found an owner after a couple of weeks take the stray to your local rescue centre. Our London centre accepts stray cats 24 hours a day.

If you feed a feral cat, the cat will usually wait until you leave to approach the food. If you stop feeding the cats, they will likely stay in the same area but be forced to expand their search for food.

Do not touch stray cats

Use a long stick to push it along or heavy gloves if you must move it. Do not approach kittens, as the mother may be near and is likely to attack you. Please teach these points to children also. If a stray cat bites or scratches you, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water right away.

Yes, that stray cat or alley cat can become your beloved house cat, but there are some caveats you should consider. Feral cats are wild and not used to people or domesticated. Stray cats and some alley cats have often had socialization and may have even been neutered and received health care.

Feed your cat indoors. Instead of letting your cat back outside as soon as they’re finished eating, keep them inside for increasing periods of time. If you’re starting your cat’s retraining during the winter, a warm, dry bed to snuggle in may be just the ticket to convince them to stay inside.

Yes, as previously mentioned, some cats in pain (particularly severe, sudden pain) will cry out or howl. If you see this, take them to the vet immediately to have them checked out, even if you can’t see anything else wrong with them.

Scientifically, the answer is no, cats don’t cry tears when they feel upset like humans do. But they still feel sadness and even grief, and they have their own ways of expressing those emotions.
