Gradually move them to a sunnier location until they’re in full sun. Gently remove the tulips from the pot and place them in a deep hole about the size of the container. Without disturbing the roots and dirt, place them in the hole; then cover them with additional soil and water.

Most bedding-type (i.e. not species) tulips are best replaced each year. If left in the ground, they are unlikely to re-flower after their first year. The alternative to discarding old bulbs and replacing with new is to lift and dry the tulip bulbs after flowering: Allow the bulbs to dry thoroughly before storing.

The tulip as duly noted in horticultural texts is a perennial flower. This means that a tulip should be expected to return and bloom year after year. But for all intents and purposes this isn’t always the case. Most tulip-lovers content themselves with treating it as an annual, re-planting again each fall.

Tulips need 10 to 16 weeks of chilling and will sprout 1 to 3 weeks after the required period.

Spreading Tulips from Bulbs

Once the initial bulb has been planted, which will take place in the late summer/autumn, it will take about one year before any “spreading” has taken place. It is not until after the first bloom that there will be some baby bulbs sprouting off from the main tulip root.

Where to Plant Tulips. Tulips require full sun for the best display, which means at least 6 hours of bright, direct sunlight per day. They also prefer fast-draining soil and, consequently, make excellent additions to rock gardens.

Water the bulbs lightly.

This helps them begin the process of growing. Don’t give them a soaking, though; bulbs will decay and die if they get too wet. Don’t water the bulbs again unless it’s extremely dry outside. Unless the ground is very dry, there is no need to water the bulbs.

Species tulips not only return year after year, but they multiply and form clumps that grow bigger each year, a process called naturalizing.

You should water your tulips on a weekly basis. Tulips need 17mm or 2/3 of an inch of water per week, particularly in later winter and early spring, to help the plant prepare to flower. Unless drought conditions are in place, tulips need minimal supplemental watering.

Tulips grow very well in pots. Half fill the container with compost and plant the bulbs at three times their depth, with a few centimetres between each one.

If the weather is cool, tulips may last 1-2 weeks. Tulip bulbs left in the ground may not bloom the following season so it’s best to dig them up and store them before replanting between September to December.

Although technically considered a perennial, most of the time tulips act more like annuals and gardeners will not get repeat blooms season after season. The best guarantee for blooming tulips is to plant fresh bulbs each season.

Tulips continue to grow after they are cut and will open in the vase. Cutting at this point will allow you to enjoy your bouquet as long as possible.

Dig up tulips that are no longer blooming and discard the bulbs. (Small, weak tulip bulbs will likely never bloom again.) Plant new tulip bulbs in the fall.

The overwhelmingly most common reason why tulips leaf out but don’t bloom is simply that the environment needed for tulips to bloom every year is very specific. All flower bulbs, not just tulips, need phosphorus in order to form flower buds. If your soil is lacking phosphorus, your tulips will not bloom every year.
