How to grow succulent plants

How do you grow succulents indoors?

Where do succulents grow best?

Since most succulents come from dry, arid, areas like deserts and other climates of similar temperament, most of them do well in full sun. Cacti, jade plants and varieties of agave in particular do well in full sun.

How do you care for a succulent plant?

Here are our simple tips to keep your succulent arrangement alive and thriving. Place your succulent bowl where it will receive bright indirect light all day or 4 hours of direct light each day (preferably in the morning). Keep in mind that the afternoon heat, especially in summer, can burn the plants.

Can I use regular potting soil for succulents?

Any type of all purpose potting soil for indoor plants will work as the base to make your own succulent soil. Use whatever you have on hand (as long as it’s fresh, sterile potting soil). Succulents need a well draining potting soil, not one that holds moisture.

Are Succulents supposed to grow tall?

Succulents will grow tall and lose pigmentation in an effort to absorb more sunlight. A gradual transition over 1-2 weeks to a brighter location will help them grow more leaves and recover their color, but some changes to the shape of the plants can be irreversible.

Why did my succulent got tall and skinny?

Succulents stretch out when they aren’t getting enough sunlight. You’ll first notice the succulent start to turn and bend toward the light source. Then as it continues to grow it will get taller with more space between the leaves. Most of the time the leaves will be smaller and lighter in color than normal.

Can you cut off a piece of a Succulents and replant?

Soil: Once the stems have calloused, fill a shallow tray with well-draining cactus/succulent soil and place the cuttings on top. Within a few weeks, roots and tiny plants will begin to grow from the base of the cuttings. Allow your propagated succulents to take root, then they can be replanted as desired.

When should succulents be watered?

Succulents should be watered only when the soil has dried out completely. There is no universal watering schedule that works for every succulent in every climate. Many indoor succulent growers find that watering 14-21 days is a good frequency to keep their succulents alive.

Should you mist succulents?

Full grown succulents don’t actually like to be misted. They thrive in arid climates, so when you mist them, you are changing the humidity around the plant. This can lead to rot as well. Use misting for propagation babes to lightly provide water to their delicate little roots.

Is it OK to water succulents at night?

You should water in the evening because succulents use a form of photosynthesis call CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism) and halt their uptake of water during periods of intense sunlight and heat.

Why do my succulents keep dying?

Since watering is the usual cause for their decay, you should determine if the plant has been over or under watered. If the stem is mushy or rotting, it’s probably overwatered. If the leaves are puckered, the plant needs more water. Don’t worry if there are dry, dying leaves at the base.

What do Overwatered succulents look like?

An overwatered plant will have mushy leaves that feel soft and squishy. The color of the leaves would appear lighter than a healthy plant, or turn translucent in color. On the other hand, an underwatered succulent will have shriveled, wrinkled leaves that appear deflated. The leaves will feel flat and thin.
