How to grow marigolds in pots

What conditions do marigolds grow best in?

Marigolds are a very versatile flower. They enjoy full sun and hot days and grow well in dry or moist soil. This hardiness is one of the reasons that they are often used as bedding plants and container plants. Once marigold flowers are planted, they need very little in the way of care.

How often should I water potted marigolds?

Established marigolds in garden beds need a good soak once each week. Give them enough water so that the soil is moist to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. If the weather is unusually hot or windy, they’ll need extra water. Water marigolds in pots when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil is dry.

Do marigolds need full sun?

Once planted, marigolds grow rapidly with no fuss. Most thrive in full sun, taking hot, sunny exposures in stride. Marigolds can even handle the reflected heat and light of paved surfaces as long as they get regular moisture. In fact, marigolds bloom better and more often in poorer soil.

Do marigolds grow back every year?

The popular types of marigolds for garden planting are all annuals, sprouting, flowering – and dying in the same year. But they may come back the following year thanks to self-seeding.

How long do marigold plants last?

Garden marigolds are annuals, which means they germinate, grow, bear flowers and die all in one growing season. Generally, their maximum lifespan is less than a year, even when they’re started early in the year indoors instead of starting from seed directly in the garden.

Do marigolds do well in pots?

Any type of marigold can be grown in containers, but keep in mind that some types, such as African marigolds, can reach heights of up to 3 feet (1 m.) and may be too large for standard containers. Signet marigolds are another good choice for potted marigold plants.

What can you not plant with marigolds?

Marigold companion planting enhances the growth of basil, broccoli, cabbage, cucumbers, eggplant, gourds, kale, potatoes, squash and tomatoes. Marigold also makes a good companion plant to melons because it deters beetles. Beans and cabbage are listed as bad companion plants for marigolds.

Do you deadhead marigolds?

The flowering time for marigolds is extended by deadheading any spent blooms. If the marigold plants form seeds, they will stop blooming. Follow the flower stem down to the first set of leaves. This is the best place to deadhead the flower.

Do marigolds multiply?

Marigold flowers tend to be in bright hues of yellow, orange and red, and many shades in between. You can use them to fill in landscaping gaps or borders quickly. In addition, most varieties are self-seeding, so they spread throughout the flower bed or garden year after year.

Do marigolds attract bees?

Bees are primarily attracted to marigolds because of pollen and nectar. Pollen and nectar from marigold flowers constitute a significant source of food for bees. Like human beings, bees also need a balanced diet, and they can get it from flowers such as marigolds.

What do you do with marigolds in the winter?

Does lavender spread in the garden?

Lavenders can spread by foliage growth (as with all plants) and seed dispersal in the late summer. Lavender plants do not spread by self propagation, or any other mechanism (however they are reasonable easy to propagate with some planning).

Does lavender grow back every year?

Lavender is a Low-Maintenance Perennial

And this beauty will come back to your garden every year, for about 3-5 years, so it’s a great investment. Before you make any plant purchases, however, I want to remind you to always choose plants that thrive in your plant hardiness zone.

Can lavender be grown in pots?

Start with large pots, as lavender plants can grow to the size of small shrubs. Twelve- to 16-inch containers do the job nicely. Fill the bottom inch or two of the container with Styrofoam peanuts or gravel to facilitate swift drainage. Add a tablespoon of lime to the potting mix after filling the container.

What happens if you don’t prune lavender?

An annual pruning is an important step for long-lasting lavender (Lavandula spp. and hybrids) plants. Without it they grow a large, lanky, woody base that can split open — it looks bad and shortens the plant’s lifespan.

Should I deadhead lavender?

Deadheading. Cut off spent blooms to encourage more to form. However, you can leave them in place towards the end of the flowering season as food for seed-eating birds such as goldfinches.

What do I do with my lavender plant in the winter?

English lavender is hardy in Zones 5 and warmer, usually overwintering in the ground outside just fine without any added protection. In an open winter with no snow cover, we may pile a thin layer (1 to 2 inches) of straw or shredded leaves over them for added cover.

How do you care for a potted lavender plant?

Place your container grown lavender plants somewhere they receive full sun (at least eight hours per day) and water them sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, but don’t let it get so dry that the plant wilts. Lavender likes heat, and many varieties won’t survive a cold winter.
