How to grow lavender in florida

How do I care for my lavender plant in Florida?

Lavender will grow best in sunny locations, that receive at least six hours of direct sunlight a day, and are planted in a dry, sandy soil. Don’t fertilize your lavender plants because that will discourage the plant from producing a higher concentration of essential oils which translates into fragrance.

How well does lavender grow in Florida?

Traditionally, lavender does not do well in Florida – but the variety known as Phenomenal Lavender is the exception! This lavender will grow well in Southwest Florida gardens, but be sure to plant it in well-drained soil and don’t over-water it.

Where does lavender grow best?

Light: Lavender needs full sun and well-drained soil to grow best. In hot summer climates, afternoon shade may help them thrive. Soil: Lavender grows best in low to moderately-fertile soils, so don’t amend the soil with organic matter before planting.

What happens if you don’t prune lavender?

An annual pruning is an important step for long-lasting lavender (Lavandula spp. and hybrids) plants. Without it they grow a large, lanky, woody base that can split open — it looks bad and shortens the plant’s lifespan.

How long do lavender plants last?

Lavenders are not long-lived plants. Expect tender varieties to live for about five years. If pruned correctly, hardy types can live for about 15 years (as many as 20 years, in some cases).

Will Lavender come back every year?

Lavenders require an annual prune to increase longevity, stimulate new flowers and slow down the woody growth at the base. Lavenders are perennial sub shrubs which retain a woody base all year round. If you prune the lavender too harshly at the end of the Summer or in the Spring then the lavender may not come back.

How often should lavender be watered?

How to Care for Lavender
  1. Water once or twice a week after planting until plants are established. Water mature plants every two to three weeks until buds form, then once or twice weekly until harvest.
  2. In colder growing areas, plants may need extra winter protection.

Do you deadhead lavender?

Deadheading. Cut off spent blooms to encourage more to form. However, you can leave them in place towards the end of the flowering season as food for seed-eating birds such as goldfinches.

Does lavender do well in pots?

Select the Right Lavender

Any lavender variety will grow in a container and can be clipped in decorative balls and cones, but some are better suited than others. They produce flowers fast and maintain a manageable size in pots.

First technique – hard prune your lavender

Over a few years, typically three or four, you can reduce the size of your lavender shrub. This isn’t always successful but it’s always worth a try. Pruning all at once would eliminate the plant. Spreading the pruning over several years is what makes it work.
