What happens if you don’t rake in grass seed?

If you do not rake the area or cover it thickly with soil, the grass seeds fail to grow from erosion issues and suffocation, respectively. You should be able to see some seeds poking out of the soil with a proper raking. In addition, your watering regimen should not erode the seeds from the area if they are raked in.

Do I need to put topsoil over grass seed?

You don’t need to turn the topsoil over. Just break it up so the new grass seeds‘ roots can easily grow through. If you just have a small area to seed, a digging fork will do the trick. For larger areas, consider a core aerator.

Do I have to bury grass seed?

Don’t bury the seeds any deeper; grass seed needs adequate light to germinate quickly. After raking, pass over the area with a roller, which helps ensure the good seed-to-soil contact your new seed needs. Overseeding is the process of planting grass seed into an existing lawn.

Can I just sprinkle grass seed?

If you simply toss the grass seed onto the soil, you will end up with poor germination. These grooves will help increase the seed-to-soil contact that is imperative for germination. If you want to help keep the grass seed and the seed bed moist, sprinkle Jonathan Green Green-Mulch™ Seed Establishment Mulch on top.

Does grass seed need to be watered daily?

New grass should be watered twice a day (or more under dryer conditions) to keep the top two inches of soil moist at all times. Water daily until all of the grass seeds have germinated, then it will be ready to begin a regular watering schedule.

Can you walk on grass seed?

Avoid walking on a newly seeded lawn and any new grass that is under 3 inches tall. Wait until the new grass is over 3 inches tall before mowing, to prevent uprooting or killing young grass. What happens if you put down too much grass seed?

If you put down too much grass seed, you will encourage competition that will cause your grass seedlings to struggle after germination because there will be excessive competition for sunlight, soil nutrients, and water. You‘ll know if you seeded too heavy when the grass grows in very thick patches.
