How to grow blue fescue grass

Plant blue fescue in full sun and in well-drained soil, although it will tolerate poor soils. The more sun this ornamental grass receives, the more likely it is to achieve its famous blue-gray color. Space clumps fairly close, about 8 to 10 inches apart since the plants don’t spread very much.

In climates where blue fescue is evergreen, you don’t need to cut them back in the spring. Everywhere else, the plants should be sheared back to a few inches from the ground to allow plenty of room for fresh new foliage to grow. Blue fescue can be a fairly short-lived perennial.

Growing Blue Fescue Ornamental Grass Seeds

Needs light to germinate. Kept at 65-75° F., germination is in 7-35 days, depending on the variety.

Water as needed to keep the soil evenly moist but not saturated until the plant displays new growth, indicating that the grass has rooted. Thereafter, allow the soil to dry slightly between each watering, providing about 1 1/2 inch of water per week.

The blue fescue plants die out in the middle, and you should divide the plants every two to three years to keep the grass clump growing. Divide the plant into smaller clumps by cutting the root sections apart with a sharp knife. Cut the division so there are at least two to three grass stems with each section.

All-round power plant

Unlike most other ornamental grasses, Blue Fescue stays fairly compact and is therefore suitable for vertical gardens, pots and hanging baskets.

In this way, is blue fescue toxic to dogs? Switchgrass and tall fescue are less likely to be poisonous to dogs, cats or humans than to horses or cattle, but eating either of them might cause stomach upset.

Festuca glauca Intense Blue (‘Casblue’) (PBR)

Garden care: Comb through the plant with your fingers in winter to remove deceased foliage. Container-grown specimens should be watered well when they are establishing. Plants may need replacing every few years as they may become tatty-looking.

Blue Flowers

Blue daze or evolvulus (Evolvulus glomeratus) and blue-flowering edging or dwarf lobelia (Lobelia erinus) can be planted with blue fescue to complement its blue-gray foliage. They both grow in full sun or partial shade and require fast-draining soil.

Caring for blue fescue ornamental grass isn’t difficult. Blue fescue grass needs average moisture, and will require supplemental water in summer. The plant may die back if the soils are too heavy and full of clay, so amend the area prior to planting with plenty of compost.

Ornamental grasses that are usually safe from hungry bunnies include: Blue fescue. Feather grass.

Bluegrass seed can be planted using the same basic seeding techniques as for Fescue. Also read about Ryegrass for cool season areas. Both of these grasses are often used in mixtures with Fescue to provide a more quality turf lawn in the Northern lawn areas.

Tall fescue establishes easily from seed and germinates more quickly than Kentucky bluegrass. Its naturally extensive root system can reach 2 to 3 feet deep, much deeper than other cool-season grasses. This contributes to superior heat and drought tolerance compared to grasses commonly used in northern lawns.

The practice of overseeding lawns is primarily reserved for cool season bunch type grasses such as tall fescue, fine fescue, perennial and annual ryegrass and occasionally bluegrass. An exception is bermudagrass that is occasionally overseeded in the fall using a cool season variety.

Late summer to early fall is the best time to plant tall fescue seed. Fall offers several advantages not available any other time of year. As air temperatures drop in autumn, soil still retains some summer warmth.

The simple answer is, yes. Beyond just throwing the seed out into the lawn and not performing any grass maintenance there is a whole world of lawn care. Even though the seeds will sprout if just thrown on the surface of the dirt there are negative effects of planting the seed in that fashion.

Fescue is a cool-season grass; that means it grows best in the spring and fall when temperatures are cooler, and it struggles during the heat of summer. Under the right conditions, fescue is green year-round, but it can go dormant (brown) during severe heat and drought.

If you simply toss the grass seed onto the soil, you will end up with poor germination. Next, you can use a lawn spreader to put down the grass seed. Very little soil is actually needed to cover the seeds, typically about ¼- inch, so simple raking will do the trick.

You don’t need to turn the topsoil over. Just break it up so the new grass seeds‘ roots can easily grow through. If you just have a small area to seed, a digging fork will do the trick. For larger areas, consider a core aerator.

Green mulch can be cost-prohibitive for people with a big lawn to establish. The next best suggestion is sphagnum peat moss. Peat moss offers some protection from animals, contains no weed seeds, offers some moisture and erosion control and helps your new seedlings establish a healthy root system.
