How to get rid of urine infection

Most bladder infections are treated with antibiotics. This is the fastest way to get rid of a bladder infection.

Urinary tract infections are caused by microorganisms — usually bacteria — that enter the urethra and bladder, causing inflammation and infection. Though a UTI most commonly happens in the urethra and bladder, bacteria can also travel up the ureters and infect your kidneys.

Drink Unsweetened Cranberry Juice

Cranberries work by preventing bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract, thus preventing infection ( 13 , 14 ). In one recent study, women with recent histories of UTIs drank an 8-ounce (240-ml) serving of cranberry juice every day for 24 weeks.

Milk is safe to drink if you have a UTI. However, yogurt and other fermented dairy products that contain “good” bacteria are better, because they can boost your immune system and prevent infections, decreasing the risk for UTIs.

Bananas and other high-fiber foods can be good for urinary tract health and preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs) by encouraging regular bowel movements and relieving pressure on urine flow.

Acidic Fruits Can Worsen Symptoms of a Bladder Infection

Fruit may be an essential part of a healthy diet, but fruits containing a lot of acid can irritate the bladder — and worsen your UTI symptoms. So try to avoid lemons, oranges, grapefruits, and tomatoes when you’re treating a UTI.

“More fiber-rich foods, such as whole grains, and less refined foods, such as white bread, reduce UTI symptoms. Nutritious whole grain like pasta, brown rice and bread provide antioxidants, such as vitamin E, which protects bladder from cancer and other illnesses,” he adds.

Use an incontinence pad or wear incontinence pants. These can lessen the concern of urinating in your sleep or give you the option of not getting out of bed to urinate. Use a hot water bottle or heating pad to warm your abdomen to minimize bladder discomfort or pressure. Completely empty your bladder before bed.

Most UTIs can be cured. Bladder infection symptoms most often go away within 24 to 48 hours after treatment begins. If you have a kidney infection, it may take 1 week or longer for symptoms to go away.

One of the first things to do when you have a urinary tract infection is drink plenty of water. That’s because drinking water can help flush away the bacteria that’s causing your infection, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).

How long will a UTI last without antibiotics? Many times a UTI will go away on its own. In fact, in several studies of women with UTI symptoms, 25% to 50% got better within a week — without antibiotics.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases recommends drinking six to eight, 8-ounce glasses of water a day in order to flush bacteria out of your urinary tract. Fluids also help to dilute your urine, so bacteria doesn’t grow to begin with.

When to get medical advice

It’s a good idea to see your GP if you think you might have a UTI, particularly if: you have symptoms of an upper UTI (see above) the symptoms are severe or getting worse. the symptoms haven’t started to improve after a few days.

Infection can spread up the urinary tract to the kidneys, or uncommonly the kidneys may become infected through bacteria in the bloodstream. Chills, fever, back pain, nausea, and vomiting can occur. Urine and sometimes blood and imaging tests are done if doctors suspect pyelonephritis.

Painful urination is a common sign of a urinary tract infection (UTI). A UTI can be the result of a bacterial infection. It can also be due to inflammation of the urinary tract. The urethra, bladder, ureters, and kidneys make up your urinary tract.

There are several steps you can take to reduce the discomfort of painful urination, including drinking more water or taking an over-the-counter aid (such as Uristat® or AZO®) to treat painful urination. Other treatments need prescription medications.

The urethra carries urine from the bladder outside the body. Whether you’re a man or woman, when you feel burning at the tip of your urethra it’s usually a sign of a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Two common STDs that can cause this symptom include chlamydia and gonorrhea.
