How to get rid of pet dander

Dander allergens are sticky, and dander in soft materials, such as carpets, mattresses, upholstered furniture and clothing, can persist for long periods of time. Unless special steps are taken, pet dander can remain in a home for up to six months after the pet has been removed.

Clean frequently and thoroughly to remove dust and dander, washing articles such as couch covers and pillows, curtains, and pet beds. 3. Bathe your pet on a weekly basis to reduce the level of allergy-causing dander (shed old skin cells).

Carpet fibers tend to trap pet dander, and every time you walk across the flooring, the particles will get kicked back up in the air. Use a vacuum with a HEPA-rated filter to pull the dander out of the carpet and get rid of it for good.

Hard Surfaces: Finished wood baseboards, window sills and tables may all harbor allergens like pollen particles and pet dander. Lysol Disinfecting Wipes provide a dual benefit because they remove more than 95% of allergens and also kill 99.9% of germs on hard non-porous surfaces when used as directed.

For homes with sensitive individuals, the best way to protect indoor air quality is to remove the animal from the home. However, pet allergens may stay in the home for months after the pet is gone because the allergens remain in house dust. Allergy and asthma symptoms may take weeks or even months to improve.

Pet allergy is an allergic reaction to proteins found in an animal’s skin cells, saliva or urine. Signs of pet allergy include those common to hay fever, such as sneezing and runny nose. Some people may also experience signs of asthma, such as wheezing and difficulty breathing.

Some people report developing immunity to their dog. Others grow out of the allergy, but don’t depend on it if you‘re getting a new dog. It is possible that an allergic reaction worsens with greater exposure.

While no dog is truly hypoallergenic, some breeds are better than others for allergy sufferers. By taking an allergy test, you can better determine the best dog for you. There are multiple ways to reduce dog allergens, including grooming and keeping a clean home.

Asthma or Allergies to Dander

German shepherds are more likely to develop dry skin than other breeds and are one of the worst dogs to own if you have a dander allergy. Dobermans, huskies and labrador retrievers also shed quite a bit of hair and dander.

Most people with allergies first develop them as children or infants. But as they age, some individuals seem to leave their hay fever, pet allergies or even food allergies behind. Doctors don’t know exactly why, but people’s allergies actually can disappear over time.

Diphenhydramine (Benadryl®), cetirizine (Zyrtec®), and loratadine (Claritin®) are commonly used antihistamines that relieve allergy symptoms or counteract allergic reactions. Antihistamines are usually safe but can make some dogs drowsy and others hyperactive.

Treating Dog Allergies

Your doctor might recommend: Antihistamines, which block the effects of a chemical that triggers dog allergy symptoms; they’re sold over the counter — like cetirizine (Zyrtec), diphenhydramine (Benadryl), fexofenadine (Allegra), and loratadine (Claritin) — or by prescription.

Antihistamines for mild pet allergies

For example, a person with mild allergies may do well with Claritin. Another person with more severe allergies may do better with Zyrtec. However, Dr. Qamar says that although Zyrtec may be more effective in some patients, “around 10% of people can become sleepy with it.”

Depending on your symptoms, you can take antihistamines: Every day, to help keep daily symptoms under control. Only when you have symptoms. Before being exposed to things that often cause your allergy symptoms, such as a pet or certain plants.
