How to get rid of gnats in yard

Gnats can become a problem around the yard and garden when there is fungal disease development, rotting organic matter, or excess moisture.

Mainly a springtime pest, these little insects emerge as the winter thaws, and they are attracted to moisture. Gnat population could simply be attributed to how moist an environment is. The more rain and precipitation, the more gnats you’re likely to have. It doesn’t have to be just rain, either.

(Males feed on plants.) Gnats are active mostly during the day, especially around mid-morning and dusk. Biting usually peaks during a three-week period in late spring or early summer, and is usually more severe following droughts.

Fact: Fruit flies are attracted to and feed on decaying fruits and vegetables, drinks (including pint and wine), spills, coffee grounds, drains, trash cans, dirty mops, towels, damp clothing, moist pet food and indoor houseplants. If it’s damp and remotely edible, fruit flies and their larvae will use it.

Repellents: DEET, citronella, vanilla, pine oil, and dryer sheets are commonly used to repel gnats. You can also use fans on your porch to keep the air moving and discourage hovering swarms.

Fill the jar half-full of apple cider vinegar and add a few drops of dish soap. The vinegar will attract the gnats, while the dish soap makes the mixture too viscous for them to escape. Seal the jar and place it in the area of the highest gnat concentration.

Lure and kill gnats with a mixture of apple cider vinegar, water, sugar, and dish soap. (Alternatively, achieve the same result simply by combining red wine and dish soap.) Pour diluted bleach down the sink or tub drain, if you find gnats hovering near plumbing fixtures.

Mix one part peroxide with four parts water, and pour it through the soil at the root zone until it begins to come out of the base of the pot. The peroxide kills fungus gnat larvae on contact. Neem oil is also an effective soil drench to combat fungus gnat larvae.

Apple Cider Vinegar Trap

Fill a glass or a bowl with 1 tablespoon of sugar, 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, a half cup of warm water, and about 5 drops of liquid dish soap and stir well. Gnats will be attracted to the sweet sugar and pungent vinegar, but the sticky dish soap will disable them from escaping.

A mixture of vinegar and dish soap can help you trap flies. To use this method, mix about an inch of apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap in a tall glass. Cover the glass with plastic wrap. Secure the plastic wrap with a rubber band and poke small holes in the top.

Attracted to damp soil, fungus gnats usually get into homes by flying inside or from infested houseplants brought inside the house. While not dangerous to humans, a fungus gnat infestation can be a nuisance indoors, as clouds of these tiny pests swarm and settle repeatedly.

Gnats can enter your house from outside, emerge from eggs laid in produce, and grow eggs in potting soil. Once gnats are inside your home, they live in decaying matter and moist areas. Gnats mainly come from eggs laid in unripe fruits. Once the fruit rots, the larvae eat the fruit to grow into adult gnats.

These small flies may be found breeding in the moist organic matter, such places as soil contaminated with sewage or drains, decaying fruit or vegetables, and garbage.

From egg to adult.

Is a gnat a baby fly? No, but they go through the same developmental stages. Each begins as an egg, then hatches into a larval – or worm-like – stage. Next, the larvae enter the pupal stage, which is often called a cocoon.

Phorid fly adults may live from about 8-14 days and the life cycle may take from as few as 8 days to about 37 days to complete. Fungus gnat adults may live from about one to two weeks and complete one life cycle in about 18-30 days.
