How to get rid of blue toilet water

We’ve all seen toilets with a vibrant pool of blue water — courtesy of those tank cleaning tablets. Those blue toilet tablets can not only cause corrosion to parts inside of the tank, but they’re also crafted with chemicals — which can be harmful and may be released into your home, as well as into the environment.

Without draining out the water, pour white vinegar into the tank, stopping at least an inch below the top rim. Let the vinegar-water solution sit for 12 hours to dissolve mineral deposits, rust, and mildew. Flush the toilet a couple of times to remove the vinegar from the tank.

A major complication that may occur includes bleach breaking down rubber gaskets and corroding steel parts. Another issue is the blue dye commonly in in-tank cleaning tablets may cover up iron deposits.

A Seemingly Simple Solution — Are Toilet Bowl Tablets Actually Safe? Quality checks indicated that toilet parts should not have worn out, so they conducted further studies and discovered that the chemicals in the drop-in cleaner tablets will eventually damage the flush valve, flapper and other parts in the tank.

Using bleach tablets to clean the toilet may seem like a great way to save some cleaning time, not to mention avoiding the gloves, brush, and cleaner. Bleach tablets can slowly cause damage to the rubber seals inside your toilet, causing unexpected water leaks and completely avoidable repair bills.

The inside of a toilet tank should be cleaned at least twice a year to maintain cleanliness and to prevent hard minerals from building up on and deteriorating the seals and working parts.

If you’re not using tablets, drain your toilet tank and fill with vinegar (as in Step 2) on a more regular basis. The vinegar kills mildew and dissolves mineral deposit build-up before it becomes a problem. Simply leave it in there overnight and flush it out the next morning.

Get a product with acid, such as Borax, to break down stains and deposits. Try pouring ¼ cup of Borax into the toilet bowl followed by 1 cup of vinegar. Swish it around with your toilet brush and allow it to sit for 20-30 minutes. Finish with a final scrub.

Clean the toilet bowl

The fizzy drink can actually remove hard-to-clean stains on the inside of a toilet bowl. Before flushing, use a toilet brush to scrub away the stains and flush. This works very well, but only for removing grime and stains. To disinfect, you will still need to use a disinfectant cleaner.

UNCLOGGING TOILETS

Pour a cup of Dawn liquid dish detergent into the toilet bowl and let it sit for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, pour a bucket of hot water from waist height into the toilet bowl to clear it out.

It’s pretty simple — just like they do on food particles that are stuck to your dishes in the sink, the combination of hot water and dish soap help to dissolve and break up whatever it may be that is lodged in the toilet causing a clog. This handy tip is great should you find yourself in a pinch.

The Environmental Working Group gave Dawn a ‘D’ grade because of it containing methylisothiazolinone, which is a “High Concern: acute aquatic toxicity; Some Concern: skin irritation/allergies/damage”. Dawn also contains 1 4-dioxane which is considered a groundwater contaminant.

Why you shouldn’t put dish soap in your toilet

“It ruins your system, so don’t do it,” wrote one person, and another added, “Please don’t do this – the rubber/seals in your toilet cistern can break down when anything else but water is used in there.”

Bleach Can Break Down Clogs And Help Unclog Your Toilet

Bleach is very high in chlorine, which can break down and destroy organic material like toilet paper, hair, and some kinds of fats and grease. To try this for yourself, pour about 2-3 cups of bleach into the toilet bowl, and allow it to sink into the drain pipe.

Vinegar And Baking Soda

You’ll need a pot of hot water, a cup of baking soda and a cup of vinegar. Pour the baking soda into your toilet bowl. Then add the vinegar a little bit at a time to avoid overflow. The mixture should start fizzing and bubbling immediately.

Pour a half cup of dish detergent (degreasing dish detergent like Dawn works best) into the clogged toilet. Follow this with three to four cups of boiling water. The boiling water and degreasers will break up the clog, sending it right through.

It may sound like an urban legend, but plenty of folks swear that Coke dissolves toilet rust rings. Here’s how: Pour a full can around the rim so that it fully coats the bowl, then let it sit for at least an hour to allow the acids in the soda to break down the stains. Scrub with a toilet brush, then flush.

Do NOT pour boiling water down your sink or toilet.

While it’s probably okay to dump boiling water in the sink when your pipes are clear, a clog will trap the water in the pipe. This can melt PVC piping and pipe seals, causing serious damage.

Most things that clog a toilet are water-soluble which means they will eventually dissolve in the toilet water. When the clog is given enough time to break down, the pressure of a flush should be enough to clear the pipes.
