How to get rid of aphids on milkweed

The bright yellow aphids found on milkweeds are destructive, non-native pests. It is important to remove and dispose of them at first appearance or they will quickly infest the plant, making it difficult for monarchs to use the plant.

A few aphids on the plant do not hurt the monarchs, though. Many aphids (but perhaps not the yellow ones you’re seeing) are tended by ants, and the ants will kill monarch larvae. When I get a serious aphid infestation, I typically use a high pressure spray of water to blow the bugs off the plant. That simultaneously washes the honeydew off the milkweed, which will deter the arrival of ants and also clean the leaves so they can absorb sun, air, water and nutrients to fuel their growth.

Vinegar kills aphids by working as a natural contact pesticide that burns them to death. The solution contains acetic acid and water that when sprayed on an infested plant will help control the aphids.

Insecticidal soap sprays are also effective against aphids, as are light horticultural oils—and if you apply these treatments at night, when bees aren’t feeding, there won’t be any collateral damage, as soap and oil are only deadly when they coat and suffocate the pest insect.

Make a homemade aphid trap by mixing a cup each of sugar, water and vinegar in an empty gallon-sized water jug. Chop a banana peel into small 1-inch pieces and add it to the mixture. Hang the jug with the lid off at, on or near your hibiscus for a week.

Try insecticidal soap, narrow-range oil or neem oil to control aphids. Because these pesticides kill aphids on contact and produce no residual control, completely saturating the infested hibiscus plant is essential. Remember to spray the undersides of leaves because aphids often hide there.

Neem oil, insecticidal soaps, and horticultural oils are effective against aphids. Be sure to follow the application instructions provided on the packaging. You can often get rid of aphids by wiping or spraying the leaves of the plant with a mild solution of water and a few drops of dish soap.

Soap Spray – Mix ½ teaspoon mild dish soap and 1 teaspoon cooking oil in a 1-quart sprayer filled with water. Spray liberally over entire plant. Bring in Ladybugs – To keep aphids in check, release ladybugs on the affected plant.

Place a yellow glass with a couple of drops of dish soap and water. The bugs will be attracted to it, and when they enter the glass filled with soapy water, they will drown.

Use lemon juice as an organic way of killing and repelling aphids from the plants in your garden.

A 50-50 white vinegar and water solution repels insects such as midge flies. You can use it on plants and surfaces, such as patio tables and outdoor bar counters. Because of its acidity, always dilute white vinegar before spraying it on plants. Straight vinegar may damage or kill plants.

Aphids themselves do not typically jump, although they do crawl (and in limited situations may be able to fly). As you can see, if you don’t attack the aphids when you first find them, they’ll rapidly breed and spread to take over your garden.

You can also blast aphids off your plants with a hose, which won’t harm the beneficial bugs in your garden. Even weak solutions can burn the plant and any beneficial insects/worms living near the plant. Bleach can contaminate the soil as well, so no.

Disease-killed aphids may also appear bloated or flattened. Insecticidal soap and horticultural oils can provide effective control if applied thoroughly. Oils work by smothering soft-bodied insects, and soaps kill these pests by removing their protective surface coating.
