How To Doodle

Doodling is one of the fun things to do as a hobby, developing an artistic talent or just for fun during your free time. A lot of people say it’s therapeutic to just doodle and let your creativity flow naturally. It’s just like sketching or drawing but in a simpler form.

If you’re still figuring out your way on how to doodle the right way, here’s a quick guide on how to doodle for beginners.

Things you will need

Before we start our step by step guide, make sure you got these materials on hand to equip you on your doodling activity:

  • Sketchpad
  • Colorful pens
  • Colorful pencils
  • Your creativity

Today, we will provide at least four easy objects that you can doodle for the first time. Remember, don’t get stressed here. There’s nothing right or wrong; your efforts to learn and practice the skill matter.

Let’s start doodling

To jumpstart your doodling, follow these 4 doodling samples:

  1. Doodling a Light Bulb
  • You need to draw the base first

Imagine drawing the base of an avocado or just imagine how a light bulb looks like. Draw it with a pencil first so you can still erase it and correct the shape if you need to. Start doodling by making an oblong like shape figure but more pointy on the top. Leave the bottom part open and don’t close the lines. Once it’s looking good, mark it with any colored pen you prefer to highlight the base.

  • Work on with the light inside

Then start working on it with the glaring light. Draw a straight line starting from the bottom and curve the line halfway. Curve it downwards and try making a loop that connects to another two loops. There should be a total of 3 loops. As you finish the third loop, curve it again but draw a curve line going downwards identical to the first line you made on the other side. Mark it with a colored pen and there goes the light of your light bulb.

  • Finishing touches

You should see by now that it starts looking more like a bulb. To finish it off, draw a little thin oblong form inside the light bulb as the light’s reflection. Then, doodle tall and short lines outside the light bulbs that will serve as light rays. For the last part, work on the bottom part of the bulb by doodling a rectangle. Inside the rectangle draw at least 4-5 jagged lines. And that completes your light bulb.

  1. Water Bottle
  • Start doodling the sides

Again, imagine how a water bottle looks like. Start doodling the sides of the water bottle and do the left part first. From the top, doodle a line that slants downward, stopping at ⅓ of the water bottle’s body. Curve the line from the slant by drawing a straight line down. Do the same to the right side. You should see how it now resembles the sides of a bottle.

  • Doodling the cap and label

Start doodling the cap by adding a small rectangle on top of the two lines you made earlier. Have the edges of the rectangle more curved. Then on the center of the bottle’s body, doodle two horizontal lines apart that will serve as the bottle’s label. You can be creative and put something like coca-cola or sprite.

  • Close the bottom of the bottle

To finish the object, doodle the bottom part of the bottle by making three curved lines. Imagine how you draw clouds, it’s similar to that. Just make sure the ends of the curve lines connect to each side of the line, closing the bottom part of the bottle.

  1. Coffee Mug
  • Start with the base

Doodle a big U-shaped line then add a straight line on top that connects the two lines on top. It should look more like a cup right now.

  • Doodle the lid

Add the coffee mug’s lid on the right side by doodling a small curved line first. Then double it up with an outer line to make it look more like a lid. It’s like forming a shape of a circle but not closed all the way.

  • Add the coffee steam

To complete the coffee mug effect, doodle some vertical wavy lines on top of the cup that will serve as the steam. You can also add some patterns or design on the cup if you like.

  1. Alarm Clock
  • Draw a bear’s face

Imagine how a bear’s face is shaped? We will start doodling from there. Start with doodling a big circle. Then, on top of the circle, draw two ears shaped identically. It should look like the shape of a bear’s face.

  • Adding the feet

To make it look more like an alarm clock and instead of a bear, draw two slanting feet on the bottom of the circle. Start with the left one by drawing two slanting lines and connect the two lines on the bottom with another line. Do the same on the right side. It should look like a pair of sticks. Then, on the ears, just add one little circle on each ear.

  • Doodling the clock’s hands

Draw a visible dot on the center. Let’s follow the 3:00 time format. First, draw the shorthand by connecting a horizontal line to the right from the dot, stopping the line with a good distance from the base of the circle. At the end of the line and then draw a triangle. For the longhand, draw a vertical line from the dot and finish it with a triangle on top. Last but not the least, finish it with another circle inside to emphasize the shape of the clock.

There you have it, hope you were able to follow along with these easy step by step doodle guide. May you fill your new sketchbook with amazing doodles of all kinds of objects.
