If the person you ask for a letter requests it, there’s nothing unethical about ghostwriting your own letter of recommendation (unless a university explicitly forbids it, but I’ll get back to that in a moment). No one knows your accomplishments better than you.

How many letters of recommendation is too many?

Can an employer refuse to write a letter of recommendation?

An employer cannot refuse, without just and valid reason or under false pretences, to provide an employee who was fired or who resigned, a letter of recommendation, if such letter has been requested. If there is nothing honestly positive to say about an employee, the employer does not have to embellish the reality.

What do employers look for in a reference letter?

Letters of recommendation provide a vehicle for a former employer to provide you with a credible history of your skills, abilities, job performance, and accomplishments. A potential employer may also request character references testifying to the candidate’s work ethic, dependability, and motivation level.

Who can give a character reference?

The reference needs to be someone who can speak to your character, personality, abilities and qualities. While family members can provide character references, they will likely be more meaningful coming from someone unrelated to you. Consider asking a longtime friend, neighbor, mentor, coach, teacher or professor.

What if you can’t use your boss as a reference?

If the company is on a directive not to provide a reference to you outright, consider seeking out a manager or someone you worked closely with who has since left the company. This person, now no longer with your former employer, won’t feel the same pressure to not give you a reference.

Can you put HR as a reference?

Providing references for former employees can put your human resources department on the spot. No laws list the information that HR must give when someone calls for a referral; however, giving out some negative information could make your company vulnerable to a defamation lawsuit.

Do you legally have to give a reference?

There is no legal obligation to provide a reference except in a few sectors, such as financial services, but any reference that is provided must be true, accurate and fair. Your employer owes a duty both to you and any prospective employer.

The answer is yes! You can file a lawsuit against your former employer for giving out negative references about you. You can potentially sue for defamation. Your former employer must have known with certainty that these statements were false.

Do I have to give a reference for an ex employee?

There is no statutory or moral requirement upon an employer to provide a reference for a former employee. A new employer could theoretically make a negligence claim against a previous employer if a request for a reference is ignored, and if this conceals a serious issue that causes the new employer a loss.
