0800 and 0808: Freephone

Calls are free of charge from all consumer landlines and mobile phones. If you are calling from a business phone, you should check with your provider whether there will be a charge for calling 0800 or 0808.

What are 0800 numbers? 0800 numbers are a type of UK non-geographic phone number where the receiver is charged for the call, not the caller. Before the launch of 0800 numbers, Freephone calls were made by calling the operator and asking for a company by name.

In July 2015, Ofcom overhauled UK call charges to finally make 0800 and 0808 numbers free to call from a mobile phone. In the past, these numbers didn’t cost anything to call from landline phones, but mobile users typically had to put up with charges of between 14p and 40p per minute.

Is there a charge for 0800 numbers? Calls to numbers beginning 0800 and 0808 are free from all landlines and mobiles. Yep, free! However, numbers such as 0844, 0845, 0870 and 0871 are more costly to ring, whether you‘re calling from a landline or mobile.

A call to an 0344 number costs the same as a call to a normal home or business landline. All numbers that start with 03 are charged at the same rate as normal local or national landline numbers that start with ’01’ or ’02’.

No calls to 0345 numbers are not free. All numbers that start with 03, 01 and 02 are usually charged at the same standard landline rate. This is due to Ofcom regulation stating that 03, 01 and 02 numbers all have to be treated equally.

Calls to 03 numbers are inclusive from both landlines and mobiles. Calls to 0345 numbers are not free instead they are inclusive. The customer will not pay anything extra to call them. In conclusion, 0345 numbers can have charges because if you have used your bundled allowance calls to 0345 become chargeable.

These non-geographic numbers were introduced by Ofcom in 2007 across the UK. These numbers are usually reserved for non-profit organisations, charities and public support services. For this reason, 0300 numbers cost to call. They’re Not Free – 0300 numbers cost money to call and that’s the entire point.

Calls to an 0345 UK-wide number from a landline phone for approximately one minute are 9p. Calls to an 0345 UK-wide number from a mobile phone for approximately one minute are between 3p to 55p.
