How to clean silhouette blinds

For everyday cleaning of your Silhouette window shadings you can: Lightly dust your shades. If spot cleaning is needed, use a soft cloth or sponge moistened with lukewarm water. If necessary, add mild detergent and gently blot the fabric.

Masking tape on a yardstick with the sticky side out is one of the solutions. A hair dryer on the cold setting, a vacuum used for upholstery cleaning with a hose, and canned air are some of the solutions people have used in the past.

If it’s not possible to totally unclip the blinds, an insect can still be removed simply by using a hairdryer or an air duster aimed behind the blind to blow out anything trapped there.

Methods for Removing Bugs

We recommend gently blowing them out using a can of compressed air or a hair dryer on a cool setting.

Use Blow Dryer on Cool Setting

Sometimes dust or even bugs end up inside the open cells. The best way to get them out is to use your blow dryer on a cool, low setting. Never use hot air because that can melt the glue that holds the shade together.

Cleaning Silhouette® Shades

Regular dusting with a feather duster or a vacuum cleaner at the LOWEST setting will usually be enough to keep the Silhouette® Shades clean. Ingrained dirt and most stains can be removed by immersing the shade in a bath of water with a mild (non-synthetic) soap powder.

Additional Tips and Ideas

For a mild cleaning, mix some vinegar or laundry detergent with water. Scrub the stain line with the mixture. Rinse with clean water and allow it to dry. Do not let the piece sit moist for too long or it could cause another water line.

Take the blinds off the window and place them in a bathtub with warm water, a few generous squirts of dish soap, and a cup of baking soda (a natural stain fighter). Let the blinds soak for about an hour and then rinse with warm water. Finish them off by wiping away any excess dirt or dust.

Mix a solution of water and vinegar in a bowl. Next, put a clean sock on your hand. Dip your hand in the mixture and wipe the blinds. For an extra clean, wipe the blinds with a dryer sheet to repel dust once dry.

Use the dust brush of your vacuum to gently remove dust and dirt that has accumulated on your blinds. You can also use a hair dryer on “cool” to easily blow away the dust, dirt and tiny bugs that have built up inside your cellular shades. To spot clean, use a damp rag and dab at the spots. Do not rub!

Add a squirt or two of mild dishwashing liquid to a bucket of warm water. Close the blinds so the slats face down toward you. Roll up old towels to catch water on the window sill and on the floor in front of the window; then dip a sponge into the soapy water and wipe each slat individually, starting at the top.

Fill a small bowl equal parts vinegar and water, then pull a clean sock over your hand and dip it into the diluted vinegar solution. Closer your blinds and wipe them with the damp sock while holding the bottom rail, then turn them the other way and wipe the other side.

Method 2: How to Clean Vinyl Blinds in the Bathtub

First, fill the tub with warm water and add a few drops of mild dish soap. Then, submerge the blinds and, while they’re soaking, wipe each slat with a non-abrasive sponge. After an hour, rinse the blinds and dry thoroughly.

For plastic and aluminum blinds, fill your bathtub with cold water and 2 or 3 cups of liquid bleach. Take the blinds off the window and soak them in the bleach solution for about 10 minutes. Drain the tub, rinse the blinds and let any excess water drip off while you hold them over the tub.
