How long do air stones last?
It depends on how dirty your tank is. Mine last 3-4 weeks before I need to pull them out, soak in hot water for about 10 minutes and then give a light brush before putting them back in.
Do you have to soak an air stone?
Airstones need to be soaked for an hour before being hooked up to an air pump. I found this out through trial and error when my airstone wasn’t producing bubbles. So, try soaking your airstone in tank water for an hour, then attach tubing to it and turn on the pump.

The most telling sign that your fish need more oxygen is if you see them gasping at the surface — they will also tend to hang out back by the filter output. This area of your tank tends to possess the highest oxygen concentration as it is near the most disturbed surface.
