Although it’s the most legendary American Le Mans car of all time, the Ford GT is far from the only one to compete and win at the French endurance race.

The stunning rarity of GT/105 is compounded by the fact that, of the five prototype cars built, it’s the only GT40 left in public hands. The first two prototype chassis, GT/101 and 102, were scrapped in the 1960’s. 103 and 104 now rest in the Shelby museum.

Reports and opinions vary. In any event, McLaren’s car passed Miles, robbing him of a potentially historic triple crown (he’d already won prestigious races at Daytona and Sebring). (To this day, others assert that the 24-hour endurance race essentially ended as the clock hit 4 p.m. — making Miles the winner).

In its blinding madness, Ford built a fully street legal version of the GT40. The Ford GT40 is arguably one of the most famous racing cars ever.

While Ford GT40 Mk IIs did claim first, second and third place in that historic race (sorry, spoiler alert!), the one that led the pack was No. 2, driven by Chris Amon and Bruce McLaren. But now, it’s owned (and occasionally driven) by 56-year-old Rob Kauffman of Charlotte, N.C.

The True Story of Ken Miles’ Mysterious Death That Ford v. Ferrari Left Out. Some conspiracies even say the legendary race car driver survived the crash. Ford was going to build a car to beat Ferrari in the world’s most important race, Le Mans—a race Ferrari had won five years in a row.

Ford had finally, and very publicly, beaten Ferrari. After more than 3,000 miles averaging speeds of around 130 miles-per-hour, Ford took all 1966 podium honors at Le Mans. Having slowed to accommodate the Ford finish decision, the Miles team finished slightly behind the McLaren team.

Ferrari Pulls Out of Sale to Ford

It led to the Ford GT40 in 1964 and Ford’s historic 1-2-3 finish in France in 1966. The failed Ford deal opened the door for Fiat to take a 50 percent stake in Ferrari in 1969.

1952-1960

The pinnacle of Shelby’s driving career came in 1959 when he won the crown jewel of international sports cars racing, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, driving an Aston Martin. A heart condition caused Shelby to retire from racing in 1960.

11 The Output That Made Henry Ford II Cry

In the movie, Shelby locks Beebe in and hauls away Henry Ford II in the prototype to show him what the GT40 can do. In the movie, it makes Henry Ford II cry.

British-born Ken Miles was a gifted race car engineer and driver. Through his work for Carroll Shelby, Miles got involved in Ford’s GT racing program. Miles won the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1966, and placed second at Le Mans. Miles died in a crash while testing Ford’s J-Car later that year.

Though, admittedly, it is fitting as the conclusion of a story that’s all about corporate meddling. The real life Le Mans ’66 ended with a historic finish: Ford trounced the frontrunner Ferrari as all three Ford cars crossed the finish line in a deceased heat.

While driving it at 200 miles per hour the Riverside International Raceway in California, Ken flipped the car over. It caught on fire, and Ken was immediately ejected and killed. His death took place just two months after the race that served as the subject of the Ford v. Ferrari film.

Ford was set to buy Italian automaker Ferrari in 1963 when, at the last minute, founder Enzo Ferrari backed out of the deal. Ford took the snub personally, and decided to beat Ferrari at Le Mans.

Ford v. Ferrari makes the case that Miles was screwed over, that he was leading much of the race only to lose out to a technicality at the end. Neither Miles nor McLaren knew of the ruling, that McLaren would be declared the winner on a technicality.

In real–life, the car suddenly flipped, crashed, and caught fire for reasons that’ve never been fully determined to this day, ejecting Miles and immediately killing him. However, in the film, the vehicle crashes after experiencing brake failure and Miles is killed in the ensuing fire.

Le Mans, however, proved a different task. In the 1965 Le Mans 24 hour, it was Ford’s race to lose. Phil Hill broke the track record in qualifications in a Shelby GT40, and during the first pit stops the drivers were laughing at how much faster the Fords were to the Ferraris.
