Richard Curtis is a British screenwriter, producer, and director who is responsible for some of the most well-known comedies in British cinema history. His filmography includes Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones’ Diary, Love Actually, and About Time, as well as the Michael Morpurgo adaptation War Horse, which he directed in 2011. He is also known for co-writing the beloved sitcoms Mr. Bean, The Vicar of Dibley, and Blackadder, and he wrote for BBC’s Not The Nine O’Clock News and ITV’s Spitting Image early in his career.
Richard Curtis was born in New Zealand to Australian parents and raised on several continents. He attended Harrow and Oxford, where he earned a first-class BA in English Language and Literature. He met and began a fruitful collaboration with Rowan Atkinson here after they both joined the scriptwriting team of the Etceteras revue, part of the Experimental Theatre Club. Shortly after graduation, he began writing on TV’s Not The Nine O’Clock News with Atkinson, co-creating many of the show’s famous songs with composer Howard Goodall. In 1984 and 1985, he contributed material to ITV’s satirical puppet show Spitting Image.
From 1983 to 1989, Atkinson and Curtis co-wrote the popular Blackadder, and while Atkinson played the lead, Curtis is credited with writing every episode. Following the success of this show, they moved on to another comedy series, Mr. Bean, which ran from 1990 to 1995. In addition, he created and co-wrote The Vicar of Dibley for comedian Dawn French in 1994.
Curtis had begun writing feature films by this point, releasing The Tall Guy in 1989, the TV movie Bernard And The Genie in 1991, and Four Weddings And A Funeral in 1994. The latter would go on to become the highest-grossing British film in history at the time, catapulting Hugh Grant to international stardom. Notting Hill, Bridget Jones’ Diary (and its 2004 sequel), and Love Actually followed, cementing Richard Curtis’ place in the upper echelons of British romcom royalty.
