Former American professional footballer Eric Demetric Dickerson spent 11 seasons as a running back in the National Football League (born September 2, 1960). Dickerson played college football for Southern Methodist University’s Mustangs and was an All-American.
He played professionally for the Los Angeles Rams, Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Raiders, and Atlanta Falcons after being chosen in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft. He rushed for about 13,000 yards throughout the course of his NFL career. With 2,105 yards in a single season in 1984, he established an NFL record. Dickerson was chosen to the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team in 2019 following his entrance into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
Dickerson initially intended to enroll in Texas A&M, but he then changed his mind and enrolled at Southern Methodist University, Oklahoma, or Southern California instead (SMU). His great-great aunt, who liked Southern Methodist University coach Ron Meyer, persuaded him to remain in Texas so he could enroll there.
Dickerson started driving a brand-new Pontiac Trans-Am during his senior year of high school, which created a recruiting issue. Dickerson purportedly started driving a brand-new Pontiac Trans-Am around the time he committed to A&M, but after signing with SMU, he immediately stopped doing so because the Trans-Am was allegedly smashed by an incensed Aggie.
