Vik Muniz (born 1961 in So Paulo, Brazil; Portuguese pronunciation: [vik munis]) is a Brazilian artist and photographer. Muniz began his career as a sculptor, but his interest in photographic reproductions of his work evolved over time, and he eventually focused solely on photography. Muniz mostly works in series, using commonplace materials like as diamonds, sugar, thread, chocolate syrup, and garbage into his work to produce bold, sarcastic, and frequently misleading images derived from pop culture and art history. His art has received both commercial and critical praise, and it has been displayed all over the world. His solo exhibition at MAM in Rio de Janeiro was only second to Picasso in terms of attendance. Muniz’s work on one of the world’s largest waste landfills, Jardim Gramacho, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, was featured in the documentary film Waste Land, produced by Lucy Walker, in 2010. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.
