Known professionally as Susan Leigh Vaughan Smith (born September 26, 1971), she is a convicted murderer who was sentenced to life in prison for the deaths of her children. In 1995, she was found guilty of the murders of her two sons, Michael Daniel Smith, 3, who was born on October 10, 1991, and Alexander Tyler Smith, 14 months, who was born on August 5, 1993, and was sentenced to death on July 22, 1995. She was born in Union, South Carolina, and was a former student of the University of South Carolina Union. A black guy carjacked her and abducted her two kids, according to her account, and the storey garnered international attention soon after it was first reported. Her defence lawyers offered expert evidence claiming she was suffering from mental health problems at the time of the offences, which caused her to make poor judgement decisions. Smith will be available for release on November 4, 2024, after spending a minimum of thirty years in prison, according to the South Carolina Department of Corrections. Smith is now serving a life sentence in prison. She is being held in the Leath Correctional Institution in South Carolina, which is located near Greenwood.
