Steven Arthur Pinker, a Canadian-born American experimental psychologist, cognitive scientist, linguist, and popular science author, was born on September 18, 1954. He is a Harvard College Professor and the Johnstone Family Professor in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University, where he is well-known for his support for evolutionary psychology and computational theory of mind. Visual cognition and psycholinguistics are two of Pinker’s scholarly interests.
Mental imagery, shape recognition, visual attention, children’s language development, regular and irregular phenomena in language, the brain roots of words and grammar, and the psychology of innuendo and euphemism are just a few of his experimental subjects. He wrote two technical works in which he established a broad theory of language acquisition and applied it to children’s verb learning. In particular, his 1989 paper with Alan Prince criticised the connectionist model of how infants learn the past tense of English verbs, saying that instead of using default norms like adding “-ed” to generate regular forms, children must learn irregular forms one by one. In his best-selling books, he claims that the ability to communicate is an instinct, an intrinsic trait influenced by natural selection.
