Stephen Peter “Steve” Marriott (30 January 1947 – 20 April 1991) was an English musician, songwriter, and frontman of two well-known rock and roll bands over a two-decade period. Marriott is best known for his powerful singing voice, which belied his little frame, and his aggressive style as a guitarist in the mod rock bands Small Faces (1965–1969) and Humble Pie (1969–1975 and 1980–1981). Marriott was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Small Faces after his death in 2012. Marriott rose to prominence in the United Kingdom as the lead vocalist and guitarist for the Small Faces in the mid to late 1960s, becoming a popular and much photographed mod style symbol. Buddy Holly, Booker T & the MG’s, Ray Charles, Otis Redding,
Muddy Waters, and Bobby Bland were all influences on Marriott from a young age. Marriott later became disillusioned with the music industry and abandoned the major record labels, languishing in relative obscurity. He went back to his roots as a musician, performing in pubs and clubs throughout London and Essex. Marriott died on April 20, 1991, after a fire ripped through his 16th century mansion in Arkesden, Essex, believed to have been started by a cigarette. In 1996, he was honoured with an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music, and he was named one of Mojo’s top 100 greatest vocalists of all time. Marriott was voted the fourth best singer by Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath, and the sixteenth greatest singer by Clem Burke of Blondie. “He had a terrific voice,” Kiss’ Paul Stanley observed, before adding, “Steve Marriott was unbelievable.” Marriott is one of Keith Richards’ five favourite performers of all time. “Steve Marriott was one of my favourite vocalists,” Journey’s Steve Perry noted.
