In addition to being a former professional footballer, Roy Maurice Keane (born 10 August 1971) is a former Irish national football manager. Currently, he serves as an assistant manager for the Republic of Ireland national football team as well as at Aston Villa. During his 18-year playing career, he represented Cobh Ramblers, Nottingham Forest, and Manchester United, before concluding his career with the Glasgow Rangers in 2003. From 1997 until his retirement from Manchester United in 2005, Keane was a dominant defensive midfielder who was known for his combative and extremely competitive style of play. It was this mentality that enabled him achieve success as captain of the Red Devils.
Keane joined the club in 1993 and was a key contributor to the team’s continuous run of success throughout the course of his twelve-year stay there. After that, he joined with Celtic, although he left the club less than a year after signing. Keane is widely considered as the best captain in the history of English football by many football players, managers, and pundits alike. He spent the most of his professional career representing the Republic of Ireland at the international level, serving as captain for the majority of that time. He appeared in every game for the Republic of Ireland in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, but he was expelled from the 2002 World Cup after an altercation with national coach Mick McCarthy on the field of play. Following his retirement from playing, he became manager of Sunderland. He guided the team from 23rd place in the Football League Championship in late August to winning the division championship and promotion to the Premier League in little over two months. Sunderland’s resurgence has been attributed in large part to the signing of Keane.
