Roger Troutman (November 29, 1951 – April 25, 1999) was an American composer, songwriter, producer, and the founder of the band Zapp. He was a key figure in the funk movement and had a significant impact on west coast hip hop, which heavily sampled his music over the years. He was born in New York City and raised in Los Angeles. Troutman was well-known for his usage of the vocoder, sometimes known as the speak box, which is a device that is linked to an instrument (often a keyboard) and allows the musician to produce a variety of voice sounds. As well as a Yamaha DX100 FM synthesiser and a custom-built talkbox (the Electro Harmonix “Golden Throat”), Roger utilised a custom-made talkbox. Throughout the 1980s, he earned a slew of funk and R&B singles, both as the frontman of Zapp and on his own solo albums thereafter. In his latter years, he was most known for singing the chorus of the hip-hop classic “California Love” by Tupac Shakur, as well as the soundtrack song “More Bounce to the Ounce” from the Vice City video game.
