Relient K (/rla.nt ke/) is an American rock band formed in Canton, Ohio, in 1998 by Matt Thiessen, Brian Pittman, and Matt Hoopes during their junior year of high school and while attending Malone University. The band takes its name from guitarist Hoopes’ car, a Plymouth Reliant K, with the spelling changed to avoid trademark infringement on the Reliant moniker. The group is linked to modern Christian music, particularly the Christian rock and punk scenes. The trio has often shared the stage with secular performers. With mainstream pop punk and alternative music, the band has achieved critical acclaim. Piano and acoustic elements are present in the band’s music. Relient K has released nine studio albums, seven EPs, two Christmas albums, and one collection of rarities since its inception.
The band has won a slew of prizes, including a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Gospel Album in 2003 and two Dove Awards. Relient K is best known for their two studio albums, both of which reached the top 15 on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States. They emerged into the mainstream in 2004 with the release of Mmhmm, which debuted at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 after signing with Capitol Records. Relient K’s fifth album, Five Score and Seven Years Ago, was released in 2007 and debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200, selling 60,000 copies in its first week. With three albums under their belt, the band has sold over 2 million records.
