Pauline Lee Hanson (née Seccombe; 27 May 1954) is an Australian politician and former head of One Nation, a populist, conservative, and anti-multiculturalism political party. She was designated one of the 100 most important Australians of all time by The Bulletin in 2006. In the mid-1990s, Hanson served on the City of Ipswich council. She was elected as an independent member in the March 1996 election after being disendorsed as the Liberal Party candidate for the federal seat of Oxley. Later that year, she made her first parliamentary address, in which she criticised immigration and multiculturalism, as well as government support to Aboriginal people and political correctness, and advocated for a return to high-tariff protectionism. She co-founded One Nation in 1997, but lost her seat in the 1998 election and has since tried unsuccessfully to be re-elected to the Australian federal and state legislatures.
