Paul David Heaton (born 9 May 1962) is an English singer-songwriter who is best known for his work with the band The Kinks. Heaton was a member of the pop group The Housemartins, who achieved popularity with the songs “Happy Hour” and “Caravan of Love” in 1986 before disbanding in 1988. Heaton was born in London, England. He subsequently joined the group The Beautiful South, whose first song and album were released in 1989 to critical acclaim.

The group went on to have a string of successful singles during the 1990s, including the number-one single “A Little Time,” which peaked at number one. In 2007, they decided to call it quits. In the following years, he embarked on a solo career, which resulted in three studio albums. In 2014, he released What Have We Become?, a collaborative album with former Beautiful South singer Jacqui Abbott that was highly acclaimed.

Heaton has been hailed as “one of our greatest composers” by the British publication The Guardian, who describes him as “his music shows an enthusiastic ear for melody, his words a sharp eye and a clever wit.” ‘The sharp satirical substance of his songs is frequently concealed by the pleasant, mellifluous voice of Paul Heaton,’ according to AllMusic.
