Michael Anthony Holding (born 16 February 1954) is a former West Indian cricketer who played for the Trinidad and Tobago national team. He was known as “Whispering Death” by umpires because of his hushed approach to the bowling crease. He was one of the quickest bowlers to ever play Test cricket and also one of the most successful. His bowling was smooth and very quick, and he took use of his height (6 ft 3 12 in or 1.918 m) to create a lot of bounce and zip off the pitch with his deliveries. The fearsome West Indian pace battery that wreaked havoc on batting lineups all over the world in the 1970s and early 1980s included Joel Garner, Andy Roberts, Sylvester Clarke, Colin Croft, Wayne Daniel, and the late Malcolm Marshall. They were joined by the late Malcolm Marshall and other notable players. With 14 wickets for 149 runs (14/149), Holding set a new record for the greatest bowling statistics by a West Indies bowler in a Test match, which he achieved early in his Test career in 1976. The record is still in tact. During his first-class cricket career, Holding represented Jamaica, Canterbury, Derbyshire, Lancashire, and Tasmania, among other teams. Holding was commemorated on a $2 Jamaican stamp in June 1988, together with the Barbados Cricket Buckle, which was issued in conjunction with the World Cup.
