Kevin Alvin Willis (born September 6, 1962) is a retired American basketball player best remembered for his time with the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. He’s a 7-foot center/power forward. Willis was the oldest player in the league during the 2004–05 season, at the age of 42, and he would remain so until his retirement at the age of 44 at the end of the 2006–07 season. Willis was born in Los Angeles and attended Pershing High School in Detroit, where he joined the basketball team his junior year. Willis played competitively at Jackson College during his freshman year before transferring to Michigan State University to study fashion and textiles for three years. The Atlanta Hawks selected him in the 1984 NBA Draft.

He was a member of the Hawks for nine seasons (plus two games in a tenth) before retiring in 1994. Willis paired up with Dominique Wilkins, Spud Webb, and Doc Rivers to lead the Hawks to many postseason berths while also providing a tenacious rebounding presence. He and Wilkins were both named team captains near the end of their time with the Hawks. In 1994, Willis was traded to the Miami Heat. He’s spent time with the Golden State Warriors, the Houston Rockets, the Denver Nuggets, the Toronto Raptors, and the San Antonio Spurs since then. With the Spurs, he finally won an NBA Championship ring in 2003. Willis is one of only 15 players in NBA history to have scored over 16,000 points and grabbed over 11,000 rebounds. In 1992, he was named to the NBA Eastern Conference All-Star Team after averaging 15.5 rebounds per game for the first time in his career. Willis returned to the Hawks for one more season in 2004-05, putting himself in the position of being the league’s oldest player. The Dallas Morning News claimed on March 30, 2007, that Willis only needed to pass a physical in order to sign with the Western Conference-leading Dallas Mavericks. Willis, who did not play for the squad in 2005-06, is expected to fill the team’s 15th roster place. On April 2, 2007, he signed a 10-day contract with the Mavericks, making the deal official. He appeared in five late-season games and was named to the Mavericks’ postseason squad as a 12th player, but he did not play in the team’s shocking first-round departure.
