Known for his science fiction novels and online writing, John Michael Scalzi II (born May 10, 1969) is a former president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and a science fiction author. He is most known for his Old Man’s War series, three of which have been nominated for the Hugo Award, and for his blog Whatever, where he has posted daily about a variety of subjects since 1998. He is also the author of three books that have been nominated for the Hugo Award. On the basis of that blog, he was awarded the Hugo Award for Best Fanwriter in 2008, and he has also utilised the site to raise money for many notable charitable causes. His book Redshirts was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2013. Nonfiction books and articles on a variety of subjects, including money, video games, films, astronomy and literature, have been published. He also worked as a creative consultant for the television series Stargate Universe, which aired on Syfy.
