In 1978, Watson earned a BA in Agricultural Economics from the University of California, Davis, and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1980.
Watson joined Chevron right after finishing his MBA, perhaps not expecting to spend the rest of his professional life with the same employer. He worked as a financial analyst for the first ten years of his career, which was an excellent foundation for getting to know the company’s management and establishing his net worth.
John then progressed up the management ladder, first as Manager of Investor Relations for three years, then as Manager of Credit Card Enterprises for two years until 1995, and finally as General Manager, Strategic Planning for a few years. Watson served as President of Chevron Canada from 1996 to 1998 before returning to Chevron headquarters in San Roman, California as Vice-President of Acquisitions and Mergers Planning until 2000, including the Texaco merger. Of course, all of these jobs and promotions not only broadened Watson’s knowledge of the organisation, but also significantly enhanced his net worth.
Following various mergers and consolidations, John Watson was moved to Chevron Texaco’s CFO in 2000, and then to President, Chevron International Exploration and Production in 2005, a post he maintained until 2008, when he was promoted to Vice-President Strategy and Development. His net worth continued to rise gradually, with a sizable portfolio of firm shares, as is customary for senior executives, maybe a sure way of encouraging continuing top performance by incumbents for their own advantage.
Watson was hired as a company vice-president in 2009, but later that year was promoted to CEO and Chairman of the Board of Chevron, positions he still holds (late 2015), effectively controlling the world’s fifth most profitable company and the second largest oil and gas company after Exxon Mobil, with profits approaching $20 billion in 2014.
Aside from his position as Chairman of the Board of the American Petroleum Institute, John S. Watson also serves on the Board of Directors of the National Petroleum Council, JP Morgan International Council, Business Roundtable, the Business Council, and the American Society of Corporate Executives, as well as the Caltex Animal Rescue Foundation.
John Watson is married, and his favourite pastime is golf, which he has played his entire life. He is, nevertheless, a sports fan who serves on the board of directors of the San Diego Padres baseball franchise.
