John Conteh (born 27 May 1951 in Kirkby, Lancashire, England) is a former world light-heavyweight boxing champion from the United Kingdom. Conteh is one of the most successful boxing champions in the United Kingdom. He was considered good enough at his best in the mid-to-late 1970s that he was mentioned as a possible opponent for Muhammad Ali. Due to his love of partying and ladies, he was frequently featured on the front and back pages of the biggest newspapers in the United Kingdom. Conteh claimed that his hedonistic lifestyle caused him to lose his talent too soon.
He began boxing at the age of ten at the Kirkby club, which had produced some of the best amateur boxers, such Joey Singleton, Tucker Hethering, and Stuart Morton, to name a few. He won the middleweight gold medal at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games when he was 19 years old. He defeated Jorge Ahumada to win the WBC Light Heavyweight title in October 1974, and he held it until 1977, when he was stripped of it for failing to complete a mandatory defence. In an attempt to reclaim the title, he lost a fifteen-round split decision to Yugoslavian fighter Mate Parlov. He tried twice more to reclaim his previous title, first in 1979 and then again seven months later in 1980, both times losing to American Matthew Saad Muhammad. Both bouts were won by Muhammad, but the first was ruled void because his cornermen placed an illegal chemical on a cut. In 1980, he retired from professional boxing.
