Jeremy Soule (/sol/; born December 19, 1975 in Keokuk, Iowa) is an American film, television, and video game soundtrack composer. He’s been dubbed the “John Williams of video game music” and “a model of success” for Western composers, and he’s received numerous honours. Throughout his career, he has composed soundtracks for over 60 games and a dozen other works. He’s most recognised for his work on The Elder Scrolls series, Guild Wars series, and a slew of other high-selling games like Total Annihilation, Neverwinter Nights, Dungeon Siege, and Harry Potter. In 1994, he joined Square as an employee after several years of private composition education. He departed to join Humongous Entertainment after composing the soundtrack for Secret of Evermore, where he composed for various children’s games as well as Total Annihilation, his first award-winning composition. In the year 2000, he departed to start his own music production firm, Soule Media, which is now known as Artistry
Entertainment. Soule has composed award-winning soundtracks for games such as Icewind Dale, the Harry Potter series, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and most recently The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim through his firm. In 2005, he launched DirectSong, a record label that releases DRM-free digital copies of his and other classical composers’ soundtracks. Soule’s pieces have been performed in live concerts around the world, including the German Symphonic Game Music Concert and the international Play! A Video Game Symphony concert series. Despite the fact that many of his pieces are symphonic, he considers himself a “music practitioner,” or someone who creates music in general rather than a certain genre. Several of Soule’s soundtracks were made with the help of his brother Julian Soule, who works for Artistry Entertainment, both credited and uncredited. Rather than any single genre, his favourite type of game to write for is ambitious games by people with innovative ideas.
