Ian Michael Chappell (born September 26, 1943) is a former Australian cricketer who represented both South Australia and the country of his birth. He led Australia from 1971 to 1975 before becoming a key figure in the formation of the World Series Cricket organisation, which broke away from the rest of the world. Born into a cricketing family (his grandfather and brother were both Australian cricket captains), Chappell had a shaky start to his international career as a right-handed middle-order batsman and spin bowler in the right-hand middle order. As the third batter in the lineup, he found his place and flourished. He acquired the nickname “Chappelli” and established himself as one of the best leaders the game has ever seen.

During his time as captain, Chappell’s blunt verbal style resulted in a series of confrontations with opposing players and cricket administrators; the issue of sledging first came to light during his tenure as captain; and he was a driving force behind Australia cricket’s professionalisation in the 1970s.

“A cricketer of impact rather than elegance,” as John Arlott put it, was how he was described. He was a lively presence in the batting crease, frequently adjusting his equipment and clothes, and restlessly tapping his bat on the ground as the bowler walked into the crease to bowl. Basing his game on a solid defence acquired via many hours of childhood training, Chappell made full use of the drive and square cut to achieve maximum success. The hook was his signature shot, and he was renowned for declaring “three bouncers an over should be worth 12 runs to me.” He had a unique technique of playing back and across to a ball of full length and driving outside of mid on, but his trademark stroke was the hook.
