He is the lead vocalist and guitarist for the band Elbow, as well as a presenter for BBC 6 Music on Sunday afternoons from 2 to 4 p.m. (British time) and A&R manager for Skinny Dog Records. Guy Edward John Garvey was born on March 6, 1974, in Bury, Lancashire, England, where he grew up. He used to host a programme on XFM on Sunday nights, which aired for a few years. A monthly column in the now-defunct journal City Life and the Manchester edition of Time Out magazine, Garvey is also a patron of the Manchester-based mine-clearing organisation, the Mines Advisory Group (MAG), which is responsible for cleaning conflict zones of mines and explosives throughout the globe. Garvey’s other work includes the I Am Kloot album Natural History, which he produced and recorded (2001). In addition to I Am Kloot’s single “Maybe I Should” (2005, which was not connected with any album), their Mercury Music Prize nominated 2010 album Sky at Night, and their 2013 album Let It All In, he collaborated with Elbow piano player Craig Potter to create their song “Maybe I Should.” He features on the Massive Attack album Heligoland, which was released in 2010.
Garvey has performed with a broad range of instruments, including guitar and different types of percussion, in addition to his vocal responsibilities. The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) inducted him as a member in April 2012, and he has served as a patron of the Manchester Craft and Design Centre since April 2012. Manchester Metropolitan University awarded him an honorary doctorate in honour of his contributions to music in July 2012, and he has now been promoted to the rank of Doctor of Arts. Garvey has also made an appearance in the CBBC programme 12 Once More. Garvey is also a fan of traditional ales, and he once set a record for the number of times he could claim to be the lead vocalist of Elbow in a single radio programme by breaking the previous mark. In addition, he has his own brand of ale, “Elbow,” which is sold at the famous Manchester bar The Castle Hotel.
