His official title is Commissioner of the National Hockey League (NHL), a position he has held since February 1, 1993. Gary Bruce Bettman was born on June 2, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois. In his previous position, Bettman served as the National Basketball Association’s senior vice president and general counsel (NBA). Bettman is a Cornell University and New York University School of Law graduate who works in the financial services industry. The NHL has seen significant increase in league earnings during Bettman’s leadership, with revenues increasing from $400 million when he was appointed to more than $3 billion in 2010–11.
He also supervised the NHL’s growth throughout the United States, with six additional clubs joining the league during his term, bringing the total number of NHL teams to thirty. Bettman’s time as commissioner of the NHL, on the other hand, has been contentious. The NHL has often been accused for trying to “Americanize” the game and for attempting to extend the league into non-traditional hockey areas such as the American South at the cost of more conventional markets in Canada and the northern United States, among other things. Bettman has also played a key role in three labour disputes, the most notable of which being the 2004–05 NHL lockout, which resulted in the cancellation of the whole season. He has been unpopular with many fans throughout the league as a result of this controversy. By the SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily, Bettman was awarded the “Sports Executive of the Year” in May 2014.
